Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo Radio

Customer Review: A little disappointed, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought the Peltor 90541 so that I could listen to ball games while mowing the lawn. I live in a somewhat rural area, yet it didn't occur to me that I would NOT be able to get all the stations my car radio does. Unfortunately one frequency I do not receive well is the one I listen to the Red Sox on. For the FM stations that DO come in, about 6-8 of them, it is great. The hearing protection works fine, and I enjoy listening to the music. So, they are good, but have limitations. Maybe there is a way to get a better antenna?

Customer Review: A/O Worktunes with digital Tuning
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought one of the older versions of this a few years ago and absolutley loved it.
The old one required manual tuning. The new one is equally as great as far as drowning out the noise but I am not crazy about the tuning. You can preset channels but if you want to listen to others that are not preset it is kind of a pain to search. Also the AM band on the new set has a constant humming noise and is really hard to listen to. Since my father-in-law listens to AM more than I, I traded him the old version for the new version (his fathers day gift). Bad idea on my part. Still like the product as it does protect the hearing and the sound is pretty good. Would still recommend but if you can find the older version, go for it. Unless that is you are into the MP3, which I am not.

Customer Review: AM reception much worse than older model
Summary: 1 Stars

I have the older Worktunes which has manual tuning. I was interested in this model because it adds an IPOD jack and digital tuning (it is a pain to manually tune stations when mowing). The new model has one massive problem: the AM reception is markedly worse than the older unit, to the point where I strongly recommend you avoid this if AM reception is important to you). I compared this to the old model by standing at various points in the lawn. When turning in different directions the AM sound would go in and out, even with the largest local stations in our city. This was not a problem with the older unit. The manufacturer must improve the AM reception to make this a valid upgrade to the older model.

Customer Review: AO Safety 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been wanting something like this to wear while using my riding lawnmower. I was concerned that I might be too far away from the radio station antennas to be able to enjoy them and really didn't want to mess with my MP3 wire connected to them. I felt comfortable that as far as hearing protection, because they are from AO Safety, they would be beneficial. They seem to work comparibly to my other ear muffs. We're between 30 and 50 miles from most radio stations that I like to listen to. I live near Houston, so everything is flat. The only real obstructions are building and trees.

So far, after 3 mowings, they pick up every station I've tried fairly well. There is one spot that the FM breaks up briefly, but I can live with that. I can now listen to the poor Astros while plodding along. Yeah!

As for comfort, they fit a little tighter than I'd like. After about an hour, I'm ready to take them off for a few minutes. Not a problem though. I'm generally ready to stretch a leg and drink a glass of tea by then anyway.

I didn't buy them for great sound quality, so I am satisfied with the sound. Nothing like a good Ipod or MP3, but I didn't expect that. I'm just pleased that I can listen to whatever I feel like while mowing. I used to wear hearing protection about 1/3 of the time. So far, I've worn these every time I've mowed.

For the price (I got them for around $38 on Amazon with free shipping), I am very pleased overall.

Customer Review: AO Safety 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector with Digital Tuning and MP3 Input
Summary: 3 Stars

The first problem I had with these WorkTunes occurred when I was ordering them. I had a pair of "PELTOR" WorkTunes. They lasted 5 years and handled a lot of abuse, so I wanted to get another pair of the same brand. When I searched for WorkTunes, these AO Safety WorkTunes came up. Well, they are not the same thing.
They are comfortable, and they provide adequate hearing protection from lawn equipment and power tools such as saws and grinders, but I want to listen to music at the same time and these WorkTunes have very poor radio reception. My previous pair had analog tuning and these are digital. The nice thing about digital is you can't accidentally change the channel by bumping into things, but to get an uninterrupted signal I found that you have to bend the antenna down, so I have had to glue the antenna down to get reception, and I can't even pick up my favorite channel that I used to be able to pick up with the previous pair.
I had read a review from someone stating this exact same problem, but I just thought they were simply too far away from the radio towers, but now I see that it's poor reception from the WorkTunes.
