Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo Radio

Customer Review: Better than Elvex QuietTunes.
Summary: 3 Stars

Hearing pads are soft and comfortable to wear, but doesn't offer enough noise suppression for me. I drive a small diesel tractor. Not sure if it delivers on the advertised 22 decibel noise reduction. I use foam earplugs under the headset to reduce noise.

Sound volume is loud enough to hear radio through the ear plugs. Without the ear plugs, the radio is a bit muffled sounding. Somehow the ear plugs makes the radio sound better. Not sure why but I'm able to hear better with the volume near max with ear plugs.

The digital channel selector drifts a little in FM mode. Probably worse in AM. There is static interference from time to time. I work in a large field in the near outskirts of town, so there shouldn't be building related issues causing this. Maybe competing stations interfering with each other? Digital push buttons make switching channels a lot easier than fine tuning a knob.

I removed the rubberized volume/on-off knob and use the bare metal post it was attached to, because the knob was too large and I found it very easy for it to be bumped to "on" between uses. This was a waste of batteries, and was easily solved by removing the knob.

All in all, this headset if more comfortable and easier to use than the headset I used for about three years, which was the Elvex QuietTunes. It was also less bulky and maybe even a little lighter. I hope this one lasts a bit longer than the Elvex. If I can get at least 4 yrs of use, I will be happy.

Customer Review: Better than I thought
Summary: 4 Stars

These ear protectors are performing much better than expected compared to many of the reviews I have read. The sound dampening is very good and the unit is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I expected the radio to be a poor performer based on other reviews, but found it to be decent for a shop environment. A stand alone radio that I have been using has much poorer reception than this unit. The nice thing is that you can actually hear the radio easily when operating large equipment (the shop radio was drowned out). What really surprised me was the speed which Amazon delivered the product. It arrived the day after shipping confirmation; that's great.

Customer Review: Better than ever now with MP3 input.
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like these, I have 3 pair. 2 are the older analog tuning style which are at best OK, and 1 that has the digital tuning. Now with the MP3 input too I am sure they rock.

Customer Review: Better ways to spend your money...
Summary: 2 Stars

I'd love to make this a positive review. Truly, I would. But this is an inferior product, and I think you should know that before you throw away your money as I have.

Other reviewers have mentioned the poor quality of the FM reception. They're telling the truth. Not only is the reception of nearby stations poor, this tuner is incapable of screening out the other stations of similar frequencies. So, not only can't you properly follow the story you're so desperate to hear on NPR, you've got to contend with country western music overlaying said story. And the "reception" (I'm being generous) changes depending on how you're holding your head and on your position on the globe. If you can hear the radio where you're standing, walk ten feet in any direction and all bets are off. Needless to say, wearing them while mowing the yard can be an amazingly frustrating experience.

So, perhaps you're thinking this won't really bother you, since you're planning to use the handy included cord to listen to your MP3 player. Sorry. Plugging in a high quality audio source [I use my iPhone or iPod] only serves to accentuate the extraordinarily poor quality of the other audio components in these headphones/hearing protectors. Really, you'd be amazed how lame they truly are. In fact, the distortion at the modest and modulated levels allowed by the electronics is so bad you might not even recognize a favorite song when it comes along.

I purchased these when my earlier version of the WorkTunes headphones (Peltor WorkTunes AM/FM Radio Headset with 22 dB Reduction Hearing Protector #90545) expired. Overall, I was happy with them, but one channel mysteriously quit working, and I was intrigued with the prospect of listening to an iPod with the new version. I should have kept my money. Don't make the same mistake I have. Benefit from my misfortune. Here's what you should do:

Buy ANY other reasonably priced over-the-ear hearing protector on Amazon and use them over a pair of Apple earbuds (Apple Earbud Headphones (White)) or another high quality pair of in-ear headphones (Apple In-Ear Headphones- M9394G/C). Your ears will thank you and your wallet will, too.

Customer Review: Big Disappontment!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased these headphones to use in my woodshop. I wanted easy to use controls, digital tuning and the ability to use tunes from an iphone. Well the controls are easy to use. Nothing else positive about these headphones. There was static on both AM and FM! Tuning in a good station was next to impossible and other stations overlapped the intended station. When you plug in the external source you get BOTH the radio and your own tunes. Even when you turn the volume down there is still static and the radio in the background. Total waste of my time, back they go! Oh and Amazon's description is wrong, there is an MP3 cable included so don't order a cable like I did.
