Customer Review: Best Filtrete Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

The Filtrete Advanced Allergen filter is one of 3M's top-of-the-line furnace filter, better even than their highly regarded Ultra Allergen filter. It works fantastic. The frame is made from very stiff cardstock, and the media is enclosed in a wire mesh. I've been using Filtrete filters for about 10 years, after a cheap fiberglass filter and a "premium" Lysol Elite filter got sucked into the furnace. The Advanced Allergen filter is my current favorite. My wife and I both have allergies. This filter prevents us sneezing during the ragweed and leaf mold seasons.

Customer Review: Works well....
Summary: 4 Stars

Works pretty well, but needs to be replaced more ofter than package indicates.
That means you use more filters, increasing cost.
The price should be cheaper

Just made 4 stars - I'd give 3.5 if possible due to frequency of filter change and cost- MOSTLY COST

Customer Review: all right by me !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

3M makes a wonderful and efficient "Filtrete Advanced Allergen Reduction Filter" for your central air and heating unit. The standard "default" dimensions are 16 inches by 25 inches by 1 inch wide; and you get 6 filters to a package. In addition, there are several different sizes of this filter just in case your central air/heating unit requires a filter of different dimensions. Some may argue that this product is a little too pricey; but I have allergies especially now that it's springtime and when I use these I notice I cough and sneeze a lot less. It's worth the price! These filters would be ideal for people who own cats and dogs because they are made extra carefully to catch their dander. The actual filter is enclosed within a strong cardboard-type of packing and there's a wire mesh on both the top and the bottom of the filter. Excellent!

Installation, cleaning and replacement of the filters are all remarkably easy. Just open the slot where your current filter is resting, remove the old filter and insert this one instead. 3M claims that you only get three months worth of use out of this filter; but actually I get about 6 or even 8 months use out of it. One thing that may well help you to get this filter to last as long as possible is to remove it once a month and take it outside where you can clean it of leaves and larger particles of dust. That may be why I get extra long life from each of these filters. Another possible way to get longer life out of each filter is to conserve energy (which we all need to do anyway) and use the central air/heat less frequently; this should extend the life of each individual filter.

Store these filters in a safe, dry place where no water could get at them; and they'll serve you well. They cost more; but they're worth every penny you'll spend on them.

Customer Review: restricts airflow, shuts down furnace, could damage equipment
Summary: 1 Stars

I wanted better filtration because of allergies. Thought I'd try the Filtrete 1700 (blue package), the Max-Allergen BEST FILTER (with the 1700 rating).

Slapped it in and the house just would not get warm or stay warm. We punched the temperature up a little Still not feeling warm. Then the furnace actually SHUT DOWN. I pulled the Filtrete filter and everything started working again.

Strange.

Called 3M Filtrete customer service. Explained the situation. We have a newer two-speed 80% efficiency furnace. They were mystified. They suggested I replace the filter. I explained that you could still see sunlight through the filter, it was only slightly dirty. But I went out and bought another one anyway.

Things seemed a little better (no furnace shut down) but it was still much cooler in the house. The furnace didn't seem to be doing its job very well. Pulled the Filtrete 1700 and put back the old washable electrostatic filter I'd used for years. Twenty minutes later the house feels much warmer and airflow is significantly better.

Side note: When I put the old filter back in, the furnace felt much warmer than usual. I am convinced that the filter was significantly restricting airflow and would eventually cause it to be damaged. I doubt the damage would have been just to the blower motor. I am concerned that it could also damage the heat exchanger, because of the additional call for heat that the furnace could NOT deliver with the Filtrete filter in place. Crack a heat exchanger and you stand the risk of poisoning your family with CO2 fumes. To say that I am uneasy about using Filtrete is an understatement.
