Tools and Hardware Reviews of Air-O-Swiss 32838 Ultrasonic Humidifier

Customer Review: Mediocre
Summary: 2 Stars

Humidifies well but... We have 2 units, one is constantly broken and makes loud noises. Catch-22 - we have to ship it to Air-O-Swiss on our costs (unit is pretty big but under warranty still). Also it requires maintenance way too often (there are others out there that require it once a year or so). If you lift up the tank there is lots of condensation (about half a cup) and if you are not careful it spils on your feet/floor/carpet etc. After exchange of the de-ionizing cartridge the unit fails frequently to start up again etc.
All in all it works but with too many issues and insufficient service for that price. I wouldn't buy one again.

Customer Review: Not Very Effective
Summary: 2 Stars

We like the appearance of the unit and the quiet operation. Based on the visable mist, it appears to put out a lot of moisture. However, even when leaving it run all night and most of the day, the humidity in our bedroom doesn't get above 30 percent.
We have fairly hard water so it leaves a layer of white dust over everything. We have resorted to using distilled water but that gets a little costly; two gallons per day at $1.59 per gallon. That cost is offset a little bit by not having to replace the demineralization cartridge.
If you need to humidify a room that is larger than the average bedroom, you should consider buying a larger unit with a much greater output.

Customer Review: OWNED FOR 4yrs
Summary: 5 Stars

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I have used many types & brands which have all failed at some point. The worst was $150 Holmes warm-mist, which failed & melted in a plastic smokey mess while I slept one night (thank god for smoke detectors). My friend recomended this Air-O-Swiss unit. It was more expensive, however totally worth it! I have owned this unit for 4yrs so far & very pleased. It's easy to maintain, consistant & reliable. Uses very little electricity in both "cool" & "warm" mist modes. It can evaporate up to 7 gal/day in "high/warm" mode, 3-1/2 gal/day in "med/cool" mode. FYI, keep it clean & it will last!

Customer Review: Poor Ergonomics
Summary: 2 Stars

The unit works well. Nevertheless, it is poorly designed. I don't mean that it doesn't look good-it's really beautiful. The problem arises when filling/refilling the tank. The tank must be removed from the base, turned upside down, (before turning it over the mist outlet cap must be removed and put aside) the water tank cap (with the demineralization cartridge attached) removed and put aside before it can be filled. While it's in the upside-down position for refilling it must be held firmly since the top (now on the bottom) is not flat. After replacing the tank cap the now full tank must be turned right side up and reinstalled onto the base.

It's not a user friendly task. There a very good chance that when refilling the tank you will drip water on the path from wherever it's kept to where it's filled and, again on the return to the base unit.

Incidentally, the unit should not be placed on the floor. It's supposed to be placed in an elevated position on a table or bench - to avoid the mist staining the floor.

It's too bad that the guys who designed this probably never used one in their own home. If they did it would probably have the filer cap on the top. That simple change would make the unit much more user friendly.

Incidentally, the product is described as "3.5 Gal.". I don't know what that refers to. The actual tank capacity is much less than that (about 2 1/2 gallons). It's probably an estimate of how much water it will put out as mist in 24 hours. That lets you know that the tank must be refilled every day.

Customer Review: Poor execution
Summary: 2 Stars

As others have mentioned, the hygrometer on this unit is completely useless. When measured against an external hygrometer, the one on the air-o-swiss unit does not go above 30 while the external unit has reached as high as 60. Mine also came with a tank that began leaking around the seams at the base and had to be sealed up with a glue gun. Nice product on paper but poor quality and definitely not worth the price.
