Tools and Hardware Reviews of Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic HumidifierCustomer Review: Air-O-Swiss 7144 Humidifier Summary: 4 Stars
Living in the high desert, we have found that the dry air causes throat and nose irritation when sleeping. We bought two Air-O-Swiss humidifiers for our bedrooms and have found sleep much more pleasant. They work great and are simple to maintain. The demineralization system works fine and no residue is found around the vapor outlet. Their quiet operation is a big plus.
I particularly like the option of heating the vapor or keeping it cool. We prefer the cool vapor in the desert climate. The cool mist produced by the ultrasonic system is perfect for the hot, dry climate.
I would definitely recommend this unit for any humidification application for a single room which does not involve adding any medication.
Perhaps the only minor drawback of this unit is the somewhat difficult process of refilling the water tank. This requires removing same and taking it to a sink which has a high enough tap under which you must place the tank to refill. Also, the full tank is somewhat awkward to handle for someone with limited arm strength.
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this because of the flu and cold season. I definitely see a difference when we use the humidifier and I like the output of the steam and the hygrometer. My only complaint is with the demineralization cartridge, I soaked it for the full 24 hours, but it seemed to stop functioning after a week. I could tell it wasn't functioning because of all the white dust on everything. I'm now using distilled water without the cartridge which is what the instructions say to do if you have alot of white dust. We do live in an area with hard water, but I still would have expected the cartridge to function longer than a week, especially since it's supposed to function for up to 3 months. I would still recommend this product because it functions just fine with the distilled water and I'm even considering buying another one.
Customer Review: Big disappointment! Summary: 1 Stars
We're on our second unit - the first did not work properly -- and it's worse than the first!!
1) Displays wrong humidity level (as compared to TWO other hygrometers)
2) As a result, does not shut off at desired humidity level.
3) 2nd unit did not heat the vapor.
4) The timing unit worked but still used a full tank in 8 hours.
Seller has not responded to request for refund on second unit.
For $200, I expected something special. It's no better than the $10 vaporizor we've had for 25 years!!
Customer Review: Breathe a Little Easier! Summary: 4 Stars
I am writing this review after reading the other reviews prior to purchasing this Air O Swiss humidifier. I think it is important to start by mentioning that I have had 3 other humidifiers in the past 5 years, so I know a little (maybe a lot!) about them. The reason I was on the market for a humidifier is because the one I have had for the past two years is such a pain to clean (requires cleaning every couple of days to prevent from spreading bacteria, mold, allergens, etc.) and my 9 week old son caught his first cold. Considering that the humidifier I would be purchasing was going to be in my infant's room, I wanted to be sure to purchase one that wouldn't create additional respiratory problems as a result of releasing bacteria, mold, allergens, etc, back into the air. This requires buying one that has a built-in anti-microbial system. This also greatly reduces the cleaning requirements. Although the price was about $200, I am very pleased with this unit. I use it in my son's room and have no problem maintaining a humidity of 50% regardless of outside temperature. Running it at 50% humidity from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM requires about half the tank of water. As for the noise level, it is as quiet as humidifiers get. In fact, I have "supersonic" hearing and the very quiet noise doesn't bother me even if I am right next to it. It isn't even as lound as my computer fan. Every once in a while you hear the air bubbles pass through the tank and those are a tad bit louder, but all humidifiers produce this same noise. The white dust that some people have complained of has not been an issue for us. We use tap water in the humidifier, but we do have a water softening system. Even with the added salt in our water, we have not seen much in the way of white dust. The only dust after 1 week of using for 12 hours at night is the standard layer of house dust that furniture collects. Although I am happy with this purchase, there are two things that could be improved with the unit: (1) They should have added a cap on the top of the tank that allows you to add water. Instead, you must remove the tank from the unit and refill in the tub or kitchen sink. When you lift the tank from the unit, there is some water that drips at first, so I recommend holding it above the unit for a few seconds to let the water drip off into the unit. (2) The buttons on the front of the unit each have a graphic icon. It is difficult to know what the icons mean without referring to the manual. Eventually, you will remember, but it has been a couple of weeks since I purchased this and I still can't remember what each button does. All in all, I do recommend this product. It functions well, looks modern, and is quiet.
Customer Review: Does Its Primary Task Very Well, But Beware White Dust Summary: 3 Stars
Having owned and ditched several humidifiers in fits of moldy frustration, I can honestly say this one is miles ahead of anything else we've used in performing its core function: adding moisture to a room. Add to that the fact that it's whisper quiet, looks pretty decent, and has no filters that inevitably get grimy and slimy.
Problem is - as others have stated - the clouds of white residue this thing produces. I suppose it will totally depend on how hard or soft your local water supply is, but for us the demineralization cartridge doesn't seem to do much of anything. Cleaning the stuff off is annoying enough, but I'm also concerned at the way in which it seems to seep inside everything in the room (especially electronics).
As we need a humidifier, we'll be switching to distilled water and ditching the supposed demineralization cartridge at a cost of a couple of bucks a day.
Shame they can't sort this out.
