Tools and Hardware Reviews of Alltrade 150003 Auto-Loading Squeeze Utility Knife

Customer Review: May need a back up knife.
Summary: 4 Stars

I like it,but its not good for heavy duty use/abuse. Cutting drywall, sharpening your pencil this knife will work fine.I was using it to clean up some grout lines, and now i have a problem with the knifes blade going back into the chamber when ever i push to hard on the tip. I abused the knife, but this would have never happened on my other Stanley knife. I would definitely buy this knife again, but i would make sure you have a back up knife.

Pros.
easy to use
larger handle
price

Cons.
blade slides back in with heavy pressure

Customer Review: Nice utility knife, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

This utility knife has a nice concept. I purchased several (4) for use in a commercial printing environment. Everyone liked the "screwdriver free" blade changing and storage. It feels wide and heavy, compared to most other utility knives. We found from extended use it does perform well. BUT.. do not drop this knife. Drops from a standard height table (3ft) will jam the mechanism and render it useless.

Customer Review: Not reliable at all
Summary: 1 Stars

I always try to find the best in products, but for this one that's going to be hard.

I guess the idea is good. The squeeze for blade, and the internal storage of multiple blades. But this knife just didn't last for me. I used this knife for ONE thing: cutting the tape on boxes to fold them up. After about the first 3 weeks of use, the first problem occurred. When hitting the button to retract the blade, it would remain out a little bit even after pressing it. This wasn't a huge problem because you could just pull the handle out which would bring the blade the rest of the way in. Then, a few weeks later, the blade release just stopped working. So to change the blade I had to remove it through the storage section rather than just use the blade release button to pop it out. Then, about 4 months after all this, it just stopped working alltogether. The blades won't come out any more when the handle is squeezed, and it just seems like the mechanism gave out.

In conclusion, it seemed like a great box cutter while it lasted, but it just didn't last. At all.

Customer Review: Not sure if it's me or the knife
Summary: 2 Stars

I just can't get the hang of this thing. At first, when I tried to change the blade it just spit them out on the ground. Now it won't change blades at all. It's also dirty from use, and I think that's jammed up the mechanism. So, for around the house use, it may be great. But on a worksite, I'm not so sure. Maybe I'll clean it well and WD-40 the heck out of it and see.

Also, because it's so fat at the cutting end, it's difficult to use a level as a cutting guide; you need to use a thin ruler or similar.

I prefer my little foldable utility knife; blade changes also don't require a screwdriver and are fast. And it's much smaller. If it only had blade storage, it would be perfect.

Customer Review: Outstanding...does need a LITTLE maintenance
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this knife every day. Can't imagine being without it. Remember the old saying, a DULL blade is much more dangerous then a SHARP blade. Well, without this knife, I used to run my knifes dull because of the pain involved in changing to a sharp blade. Now, I NEVER use a dull blade, my work is much faster, and I don't have to worry about missing a cut, or overpowering a dull blade.

When you use the blade every day, goo, grime, grit will build up on the blade keeping it from retracting(blades typically have excess oil from the manufacturing process). Spray a little silicon on the blade, wipe off the goo, and continue on. The squeeze mechanism will also get dirty. Just keep the mechanism clean, and you won't have any problems. The time spent keeping it clean is VERY SMALL for keeping a SAFE TOOL.

Buy this and never look back. Buy a box of 50 titanium blades too, because you are going to be SO SPOILED with the ease of not only replacing a blade, but of using a sharp blade...you will use/want a sharp blade ALL THE TIME.
