Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup

Customer Review: Absolutely terrible excuse for a safety product
Summary: 1 Stars

The 9120B does not work properly. I have a dozen of these junk units installed in new construction by our builder. As mentioned in other reviews, it gives repeated false alarms in the wee hours of the night, presumably--according to the manufacturer--due to AC power fluxuations. The battery compartment is extremely difficult to fit a battery into and this thing goes through batteries like a cheap toy. The manual in incorrect regarding LED and beep codes. I am mad; the time is currently 4:23AM and I cannot get back to sleep from another random, middle of the night BRK false alarm. There is a ladder (just in case it goes off yet again) in my bedroom and a pile of brand new batteries on my dresser that this junk unit did not like. Ask yourself this: Why should a power fluxuation make it go off? Isn't that precisely why the battery is there? That is why they call it battery backup. We need to put the whole lot of these on a boat back to China!

Customer Review: First Alert 9120B Problems
Summary: 1 Stars

I agree with everyone. This smoke detector is garbage. I have been trying for three days to correct the constant chirping from my upstairs hallway smoke dectector. I have even replaced it with a new one. They worked fine for the first two years (brand new house) and now I am going to have to be comitted because of these things. I will probably rip them all out tomorrow and go with battery only smoke detector. I've had it! Do not wasted your money on this. I also have these in a vacation condo and after three years I had the same problem. TO SAVE YOUR SANITY DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

Customer Review: Junk
Summary: 1 Stars

My house is a two year "upscale" with these placed in varying areas throughout. Just about all have had the "false alarm" chirping. I have replaced the batteries to no avail. Don't waste your money on them!

Customer Review: Remember to follow maintenance directions.
Summary: 4 Stars

The instructions say to vacuum with a soft brush attachment and to test once a month. As with many electronics, dust is a big issue. As well as storms and power surges. We have these units throughout our home and the have worked reliable until we started have random beeping in different rooms. We read the instructions, starting cleaning the units and testing them. All but one stopped beeping. I went on line to read the trouble shooting directions and did everything. The unit still beeped once the next day. I called customer service. They talked me through what I had done, said that it is under warranty and are send me a new unit. Absolutely no hassles.

Customer Review: replacing old hardwire alarm
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased 3 of these to replace 15 year old BRK hardwire units that were in my house. The alarms on the old units were starting to go off randomly at all hours. I decided, despite reading other reviews on this product, to purchase the same brand since they weren't very expensive and they had several good features. I took the old ones out and replaced the new ones in under 10 minutes. It was quite easy. Although I've only had them a few days, no random alarms are going off.
