Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: A HORRIBLE detector Summary: 1 StarsDo you like to stay up all night listening to the sound of a high-pitched chirp once every minute? If so, this is the detector for you. I've replaced the battery 4 times in 6 days, nothing has worked. I've vacuumed all around and inside, and it continues to beep. I've called the company, and their representative told me that they receive NUMEROUS calls like mine EVERY DAY. Do you think there's a problem? YES! This detector is clearly doing more harm than good. BRK has undoubtedly manufactured a defective product and breached every warranty. Buy this alarm if you don't like to sleep.
Customer Review: The WORST smoke detector on the market Summary: 1 StarsBlame the electrician that installed it, but I blame BRK First Alert. This is by far the WORST experience I have ever had with a smoke detector or any home electronic device. One week ago, around midnight, I heard the first chirp come from one of two detectors in my hallway (one of at least 6 in my house). I continued to hear the sound, which kept me up until 3 a.m. as I tried to find a 9-volt replacement battery somewhere in the house to no avail. I even attempted shutting off the power because this device is connected to wiring in the ceiling. Nothing worked. I got no sleep that night, and I've had little sleep since. I have replaced the battery four times since last Thursday, I've vacuumed the device (just as the website suggests), and I've pulled the thing out of the ceiling. NOTHING has worked. Today I spoke with one of their representatives on the telephone, who told me that he and his co-workers (how many of them? 10? more?) receive 1-2 calls just like this EVERY DAY. Clearly there is a problem. Unfortunately, this particular device has yet to be recalled, but I don't doubt that like other First Alert products, it will soon be. My next stop is the Attorney General. This is a horrible detector. Buyer beware!
Customer Review: BRK 9120B Summary: 5 StarsEasy to install and works perfectly. Although it is advertised as a direct replacement for an older model, it's not quite that easy - you also have to replace the mounting bracket. The electrical connection was identical, however, so no electical work was required. It interfaces properly with a network of the older models.
Customer Review: Easy to install Summary: 5 StarsThis smoke detector has all the little wires and fiddly bits you'll need to install it. This newer model also has an LED to tell you if it alarmed. This is a big improvement over the old models which might accidentally alarm in the middle of the night but you never knew which one.
Customer Review: Late night alarm clock Summary: 2 StarsI have to agree with the poster who mentioned random alarms. Our house came installed with 9120B units. Infrequently, one of them will trigger (briefly -- 1-3 beeps) overnight. I found a reference on their web site that mentioned possibility of false alarms when power substations were switching.
The first time it happened, it really freaked me out. Before the sound stopped echoing in the house, I was 3 rooms away from the bed shouting "fire! fire! fire!". It took me several hours to calm down enough to sleep. Not a happy sight.
