Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor Pack

Customer Review: 4120SB
Summary: 1 Stars

I am thinking that BRK is pushing their lousy defective 4120 smoke detectors to the home builders. My home was installed with these detectors too. And, they too went off 3-4 times early in the AM hours to frighten my 1-year old baby. I have decided to disable them all. Thanks to the reviews here, I will not be getting any BRK products.

Customer Review: 67 One Star Reviews Can't Be Right? Actually, Spot On - Buyer Beware!
Summary: 1 Stars

My problem is slightly different, but no less aggravating, from those reported by other users in that my detectors do not go off at random. Rather, whenever the temperature in the house rises above 76 degrees or falls below 60 degrees, 4 of the 6 detectors go off. Note: These temperature ranges are well within the operating limits of these detectors.

I tried all the initial troubleshooting steps: Replacing batteries, vacuuming the units, removing power completely and discharging the units (see elsewhere for the exact instructions), all to no avail. What works is turning on the central A/C when the house gets too warm (or blowing air from portable fans) or turning on the heat when the house is too cool. These aren't really viable or inexpensive solutions, especially since even in the mildest weather, heat rises to to the 2nd floor which is where the malcontents are (were) installed.

Thinking that the problem might be that just one was defective and it was causing 3 of the others, which are wired in series, to go off, I removed one unit completely, and discharged the other units. I still had the problem so after trial and error, I actually was not able to narrow it down to any single defective unit. All the units have the same manufacture date: May 05, 2006.

I was going to order replacement units but after reading so many poor reviews, I am looking for alternatives.

Customer Review: A HORRIBLE detector
Summary: 1 Stars

Do you like to stay up all night listening to the sound of a high-pitched chirp once every minute? If so, this is the detector for you. I've replaced the battery 4 times in 6 days, nothing has worked. I've vacuumed all around and inside, and it continues to beep. I've called the company, and their representative told me that they receive NUMEROUS calls like mine EVERY DAY. Do you think there's a problem? YES! This detector is clearly doing more harm than good. BRK has undoubtedly manufactured a defective product and breached every warranty. Buy this alarm if you don't like to sleep.

Customer Review: A good product that keeps my family safe
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll be very specific. This review is for the BRK 9120B Alarm. I bought a bunch of them to replace the hardwired alarms in my fifteen year old house. A warning beep that replacement was necessary was the first sign that one of the original BRK alarms (a different model number) was failing from old age. Of course the beep was repeated on all nine alarms in the house so I spent about an hour tracking it down to the failing alarm which I removed from the loop. Sure enough, silence returned.

I did my homework on BRKs website and figured this alarm would be a direct replacement for what I had. I ordered one just to be sure. Indeed, it installed perfectly with no rewiring. Also the product tested perfectly as an individual alarm and in alarming every device in our house. There is an indicator that illuminates to show that it is the device that initiated the alarm.

After that, I ordered enough more of the alarms to redo the entire house as I figured if one was failing, the rest couldn't be far behind. I certainly got my investment out of the original ones.

One additional point. The new ones are packaged with a little dust 'bonnet' to cover them during installation. I'm saving those bonnets to use to cover them when we do the next major clean-up and painting of the house. I don't want the alarms ruined by dust or paint intrusion by unrelated handiwork. I'll of course remove the bonnets as soon as the dirty work is finished in each room.

I'm absolutely confident that these products will protect us as I installed them myself following the manufacturer's instructions.

Customer Review: Absolute Junk-Do Not Buy!
Summary: 1 Stars

We have a brand new home built less than a year ago. These smoke alarms intermittently and randomly set off single piercing beeps loud enough to wake you up. They are not battery alerts, which are chirps that occur once per minute until you change the battery. All lighted indicators on all the units (we have 17 of them) indicate they are working properly, yet BEEP, there went another one! The problem is you can't figure out which ones are doing it since they are completely random and coming from various areas of the house. Changed all the batteries in all the units to try to stop the insanity. Nothing. Tried to contact the company but they have no email address on their website. Called them and they said it was dust. I told them they were brand new and I checked every one of them and they are immaculate. HMMM, can't figure that out.

Unless you want to hear mind-piercing beeps every so often with no reasoning behind it, DO NOT BUY this product. I would prefer to be water-boarded. We are having them all replaced with another brand.
