Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor PackCustomer Review: Biggest Headache in our New House Summary: 1 Stars
These were installed in our new home as part of a monitored system. In four years, two have gone into alarm mode without reason. Fortunately, we were home both times and could abort the alarms before the fire department was dispatched. After researching, I'm going to swap them out for Kidde detectors.
Customer Review: Buy a Kidde instead Summary: 1 Stars
I made two mistakes when I ordered four of these "random alarm clocks" as another reviewer labeled them. The first was to assume that because I had 86RAC, two models prior this would be a good choice. The second was to completely ignore the preponderance of one star ratings, about 55% of the total. Right after installation I had random false alarms at various hours of the day and night. While customer service was easy to get to and pleasant enough to deal with, it was always to be the fault of "dirty power", surges, etc. that were triggering the alarms. Odd I thought, that was never a problem before. Odd too that a device designed to run on AC or battery would not be impervious to some change in power, or even the lack thereof. Up and down I spent a great deal of time rechecking connections, rewiring to no avail. After a week I removed them packed them up and returned them, ordering Kidde i12060 models. Kiddes after more than 72 hours, blissfully quiet. They're a bit more expensive, but clearly worth the difference. Battery door design far more convenient and better quality.Kidde i12060 Hardwire with Front Load Battery Backup Smoke Alarm
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY - RANDOM CHIRPING PROBLEM Summary: 1 Stars
My husband and I had to pull them all out after a year of several middle-of-the-night scrambles running around the house trying to deactivate them. Each time they went off without any smoke-related cause, and always in the middle of the night. Nightmare!
Customer Review: Defective Summary: 1 Stars
Like so many of the other reviewers, I have been awakened early this morning by random chirping from one of these alarms. This is the third unit to fail in my house. It is just a couple of weeks after the 1 year mark. Replacing the battery in the other 2 units hasn't worked, and I'm having trouble locating which of the remaining units has failed. So, I'm going to remove ALL of them and replace them with an entirely different brand. I will be mailing all of them back to the manufacturer with a very nasty letter, especially since my last house burned down and I'm extremely touchy about all safety related products in my house.
They deserve a serious berating for producing such a shoddy product.
Spend your money elsewhere.
Customer Review: Did not come with all the parts Summary: 1 Stars
The 9120b package does not contain everything you will need while owning this product. It DOES include everything to get you started on your path to pain. I got it installed, up and running, and chirping loudly at all hours of the night as described by previous reviewers, but when my eardrums were pierced during a particularly brutal middle-of-the-night false alarm session and began bleeding profusely, I could not find the replacement pillowcase that should come standard with this product.
I've experienced the "beep once loudly every minute for hours" thing, but I have also endured nights of 30 minute full-on false alarms when this bad-boy decides he just hasn't had enough attention in recent weeks. Usually occuring around 3:00am, my first defense is trying to cover my head with the bloody pillow for some sort of relief from the unyielding racket. This feeble attempt lasts for only a few minutes before I desperately begin searching for something to use as a ladder. The next several minutes are spent twisting, pulling, clawing, punching, and spitting at the alarm, trying to get make something other than loud beeping happen. Telekinetic attacks are futile. "No way! I ain't shuttin up!!" the alarm boldly declares. I angrily vow to find the golden hammer that will end this epic showdown once and for all, but the relentless screams of the alarm are simply too much and I am eventually defeated. I resort to taking my crimson pillow to a closet or outside where I can fashion a makeshift bed out of leaves and branches to finally get some peace and quiet (although my ears, of course, are still loudly ringing). It is usually at this point that the alarm figures it isn't damaging my brain cells at an efficient rate any longer and gives it up.
I haven't won a lot of things in my life, but feel like I deserve a medal of honor for not committing suicide after owning a BRK 9120b. Maybe another item they forgot to include in the packaging?
