I recieved this per request for Christmas of 2007 soon after getting it I realized it never shut off so I bought a seperate digial Hygrometer which showed the humidity was well above what the machine was set at. Then it wouldnt turn on the "float" seemed to never get high enough to turn the machine on, then the read out wouldnt adjust but 24 hrs later was working fine.. The little latch that holds the water "door" closed broke so now its held closed by a latch made by Saftey1st (a baby proofing latch) does it work. Yes did I call the company yes in fact I called them within 3 days of getting the "gift" and was told I could either send back the entire until with proof of purchase (which I did not have) or I could buy a seperate hygrometer through them to see if the machine was actually defective. Needless to say last winter(2008) I was so annoyed with this machine I dreaded pulling it out of the basement for use but really had to as I could not find another locally or one on the net which would cover the sq footage as this one does. This is the beginning of the 3rd season I am using it and today it ticked me off one final time by not kicking on with the humidty in the house at only 28% and the machine set for 50% and the tank filled that I am searching for a new one.. Maybe mine was defective my father has an essick air humidifier (whole house) and has never had any problems at all.. Also this puts out cool air which is supposed to be good for the skin, mucos membranes etcs however its not good when its subzero outside and the humidity is cooling the house that everyone has a chill
