Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bessey D-BKWH Quick-Change Folding Utility Knife - Wood Grain HandleCustomer Review: Great knife, but some problems Summary: 3 Stars
I got this knife for my husband for Christmas after carefully research. He loved it for the first couple months until the screws that hold the belt clip on the knife fell out. Some of the other screws followed suit. This really is a great knife, bar the whole "screws coming loose" thing. He got the Bessey PVC knife for Father's Day and is thinking of gluing the screws in somehow so they stay in.
Customer Review: Great knife, get it. Summary: 5 Stars
This is by far my favorite folding razor knife (I have several). The fit and finish is really quite remarkable given the modest price, on par with other knives of this type. The polished stainless steel body/rosewood inlays look hand-finished and the locking mechanism is rock-solid. The pocket clip is similarly polished and looks really nice.
The knife has a heavy, solid feel which imparts a feeling of quality that aluminum or plastic just don't have. The blade shoots out with a flick of the thumbstud and makes a nice metallic "click". The lock-back mechanism drops the blade down just enough so that it can be easily closed with one hand as well.
If you appreciate beauty and toughness in your tools, this is the knife you want.
Customer Review: Great stocking stuffer Summary: 4 Stars
Bought one for myself and a few more to give to family and friends. Shipped and arrived quickly. Operates as advertised. Easy blade change. It has a nice weight in your hand and feels quite sturdy. Only downside is that there is no place to store spare blades like on some of the traditional shaped box cutters. (Thus the reason for the 4-star rating)
Customer Review: Handy and Handsome: A Bessey Wood Grain Handle Folding Utility Knife Review Summary: 5 Stars
We bought a new house, and the packing was well under way when I came across the Bessey D-BKWH folding utility knife. I have inexpensive utility knives for the occasional drywall repair job and assorted odd jobs. However a folding knife seemed more useful on moving day and the following days spent unpacking.
Like typical utility knives, this one uses a standard angled tip blade. Unlike the typical knife, the Bessey folds like a quality switchblade including a safety to prevent accidental closing. Weighing 6.2 ounces, it has a nice weight and is shaped for comfortable use. A clip on the side permits storing the utility knife on your belt or is small enough to fit in a jean's pocket.
Most standard utility knifes require disassembling the handle to get the blade and reassembling back to a usable state. This is not a difficult task, but is much easier on the Bessey D-BKWH folding utility knife. Simply open the blade, flip the security latch on the top, and slide the blade cover down. With full access, flip or replace the blade, then reverse the previous steps holding the blade cover in place with your thumb.
As for moving, this folding utility knife was an excellent choice for me. With everything going on and my inability to stay in one place, keeping track of the knife was easy. I would use it, then store at my side. Even though we are pretty much unpacked now, I still use my Bessey instead of my other utility knives. This is an excellent quality utility knife worth purchasing.
PROS:
Quality construction
Handsome appearance
Simple blade changing
CONS:
No storage for extra blades
Customer Review: Heavy duty and classy Summary: 5 Stars
This is not your typical lightweight utility knife. The handle is steel and wood, well balanced and with a very nice heft. Unless you are doing fine surgery, a little heft in a knife helps get the work done quickly and easily. The wood and steel surfaces are not finely matched to the same levels, but come on, this is a utility knife. It looks pretty darn sweet for what it is.
I am used to having storage for extra blades in the handle of my utility knives but this knife lacks that feature. Obviously you can flip the blade around quickly to use the other end, but if you are doing work that requires the blade to be replaced several times you will need to be sure to have extras with you. There are other versions of this type of knife that have blade storage, but they do not feel the same as this knife.
One-handed operation is great (open and close it several times before you evaluate the ease of opening - it breaks in). I like this folding style of knife better than the sliding action of old style utility knifes. Somehow that sliding would always eventually bind up. I can't see that happening with this folder. There is a clip on the side that allows you to secure it to your pants pocket, belt, or tool pouch, or just drop it in your pocket - the blade is entirely protected when it is closed.
