Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker BDL170 Bullseye Auto-Leveling Laser With AngleProCustomer Review: Black&Decker laser level Summary: 4 Stars
I liked the ease of using this product. I like the drywall nail and magnet on back of level. The different angles that you can use this at is a great feature. The only problem is the brightness of the red laser light. When used in brighter lit rooms it is hard to see down the length of the wall; it starts our strong and weakens as the line extends. This is good for me since I don't have many uses to use a level; except to hang pictures and curtain rods. This product makes it much easier for me to hang them straight. I can also do it alone; no need to ask someone if what I'm hanging is straight.

This is an awesome product. It makes the job so simple and accurate. It doesn't require a degree to use eithe!
Customer Review: Disappointed Again Summary: 1 Stars
For thirty years I have been a General Contractor. This is the third (tool box) laser I have brought to hopefully make my life easier, yet I have not found any of these small units to be as advertised. (I say "tool box" because I do own some very expensive "large" self leveling laser units for excavation and construction that are very good)
AUTO leveling! FAT CHANCE! Not even close. Yes, it does have a sight gage in the front that gives you "an indication" of where level might be.
This too was very poorly designed. HARD TO READ. There is no actual mark to show THE LEVEL POINT or really where you are on the gage, only a series of hash marks. These marks are not balanced from one side to the other either. (There is an odd downward line intersecting the gage at 14 degrees right, which serves no purpose. This may be a manufacturing flaw, if so strike three.) You are left to guess where in these hash marks you should place this very poorly designed alignment mark to be set at level. As this mark is not within the gage itself, it is totally subjective.
I found I still had to measure the distance to the floor in several locations to see how level I was, and I wasn't! (This only works if the floor is level.)
ANGLE PRO, MAYBE! An angle is what you get! Look elsewhere. This is a waste.
The mounting pin is a problem to keep out to mount it and has no relevance to the laser height you are trying to achieve. I had thought maybe its pendulum style mount would work as a plumb-bob to level it but no such luck!
Customer Review: Dissappointed Summary: 1 Stars
I wish I had a better story but the item arrived and given as part of a Christmas gift to only find out it was not working.
I was concerned as it arrived without any buffering in the package (unlike the other items I had also ordered and received) as well as the outer packaging was scratched and the item looked shop worn.
I hope the distributor takes a good look at his packaging and maybe do a test on his items before sending them out.
Customer Review: Great For Typical Household Projects Summary: 5 Stars
I've recently purchased a new home and have used this laser level for approximately 1 month. Typical projects included hanging artwork, curtains, etc. As an engineer I can say this is one of the most useful tools I've ever purchased because it easily eliminates a lot the guesswork associated with creating a level line of reference over a long distance.
The self leveling feature is by far the most useful quality about this product. I had to hang two sets of curtains on the same wall. Using 3M Command Adhesive strips I mounted the laser level at the desired height in the space between my window and sliding glass door. I projected the self leveling laser line to the right and I mounted the curtain rod over my sliding glass door. I then pushed the side button on the laser level to project the line to left and proceeded to mount the other curtain rod over a window. Both curtain rods were easily mounted level and at the exact same height - no guess work - no need to use a standard level or tape measure. It really made the job a breeze.
Even on a bright afternoon you can still see the line in a well lit room, however I'd be skeptical that it would work outdoors in a bright environment. The line easily projects over 20 feet which should be fine for almost any interior wall. Corners are a bit of a problem b/c this unit is wall mounted, but moving it is quite easy.
It does have the ability to lock the laser in place (such that it does not auto level) so you can point it in a particular direction / angle. The angle gauge is completely useless. There are stick marks, but it does not have the actual number of degrees labeled. You'll have to use a protractor or just "eye-ball it" if you're doing an angle measurement.
Keep in mind what you're purchasing: this is a general household use level. It's not an adjustable rotary level that a contractor would purchase for a few hundred dollars. I gave it five stars b/c it fulfills (what I consider to be) its intended purpose perfectly.
Bottom line - this will give you a horizontal and vertical level line of reference that will work for nearly all typical household chores such as mounting wall decor, curtains, etc. The $25 you spend is WELL worth the hassle it can save you.
