Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker CCS818 18-Volt Cordless Electric Chain Saw

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

Good points: Instruction booklet is well-written. Fairly easy to put together. Is lightweight.

Bad points: Battery took over 1 day to charge and died after about 1/2 hour of use which is very frustrating. Had to re-charge it for another 24 hours and try again, and again it ran out of adequate power in 1/2 hour. Seemed to leak oil no matter what, as well.

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this back in April 2008. I spent a good deal of time puzzling over the user manual, since this is the first chainsaw I ever had. The manual was not clear to me at all, but I finally worked out how to put the chainsaw together. I ran it for about 25 minutes when the chain came loose. Turned out one of the screws that hold the chain assembly together had fallen out. I couldn't find it. Called B&D, and they said they'd ship the screw to me. 2 weeks later, no screw. Called again. They said they'd send another. 2 weeks later, no screw. After customer service assured me that they were sending the part, I went to the DeWalt site that B&D directs you to when you need to buy a part. Turns out the screws were backordered until June 28. In early July, I finally received several screws. Yikes.

Now that I'm able to put the thing together, I have to say that it's lightweight and does cut what it says it will, but getting the chain back on is a nightmare, particularly when you've been using it and it's nice and oiled. Every time I've used it so far, I've followed the directions for tightening the chain, and it still falls off after about 10-15 minutes of use. It does note somewhere that you have to operate the saw for a couple of hour to break the chain in. Guess mine isn't broken in yet. I am disappointed as I find it extremely hard to use thus far.

Customer Review: Does the Job
Summary: 4 Stars

I was hesitant when ordering this chainsaw based on other reviews. After several weeks of use I recommend this chainsaw. There are a few things to keep in mind though. First, the blade is not very long and its only 18V; large trees are almost impossible. Second, I also have the 3 piece B&D yard tool set and so I have 3 extra batteries. If battery I'm using gets low I can easily put in another. Lastly, the oil leak others speak of is minimal (if at all) and the saw does take some use and adjustments before optimal performance. Overall, it does what its supposed to.

Customer Review: Does what it says
Summary: 5 Stars

Received my order promptly from Amazon, like always. Put the battery on charge and left it all night. This morning i put it all together and made sure the chain was oiled good. Ended up cutting down a 25 foot Green Ash tree in my backyard. Cuts small limbs like nothing and even the 6-8inch trunk of this tree was no contest. Very encouraged by its performance. Not sure how it will fare in the long run, hopefully they used a quality motor. Found an accessory chain @ my local hardware store for $15, which seems a little high. Will buy up a couple if i can find them cheaper.

Customer Review: Doesn't cut long on a charge
Summary: 3 Stars

Handy saw... lightweight and effective. That is, while the battery charge holds out, which isn't very long at all. And, the battery takes at least five hours to re-charge. So, if you need to do more than trim a few branches, pick up several batteries. Or buy a gas chain saw to begin with.
