Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker CMM1200 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching Lawn MowerCustomer Review: Almost everything we wanted Summary: 4 Stars
Getting up in years, my wife and I needed a less demanding lawn mower. So we bought this product. It is great in every way, except it is very heavy and will not pull itself. We realize that, for us, this was not the right choice. And, of course, buying it over the Internet, there is no way to return it and trade it in on something else.
Customer Review: An Excellent Cordless Mulching Mower!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is by far the best lawn mower I have used. I purchased the mower in May 2007, so I have had all summer and autumn to mow and share my experiences with it.
It is very, very easy to use. When you first receive the mower, plug it into the battery charger and let it power up overnight. The mower will be charged the next day. When you are ready to mow the lawn, disconnect from the battery charger, turn the safety key to on, and lift the lever. That's it! This mower starts immediately!! No gas or oil to worry about, and it's great for the environment.
In my experience the mower lasts about 75-90 minutes on one battery charge. It depends on the length of the grass - the longer the grass, the more energy the battery uses which shortens the mowing time.
I tend to cut the front and back yard lawns on different days (because I like the outdoors), so this gives me plenty of time to do a thorough job. It also seems that the battery becomes stronger (meaning - it mows for a longer period of time) the more the mower is used.
It is a powerful machine that does a beautiful job in cutting my lawn. I am very pleased with my Black and Decker Cordless Mulching Mower! And, my neighbors are envious!!
If you have less than ½ acre to cut, then I highly recommend this cordless lawn mower.
Customer Review: An Excellent Mower Summary: 5 Stars
I researched online before getting this mower. The price was important but I really wanted something that was going to be durable and also get the job done. I do not have a hug lawn, but I have to mow every week because of our homeowner's association's CCRs. This mower is an excellent tool as it provides easy of use with a quick height adjust mechanism. There is no pull string to mess with, no gas or oil. Just charge and go. Excellent product.
Customer Review: An enjoyable way to go green Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this mower last summer (2008). I call it my "magic lawnmower" because it's so very delightful. It runs quieter than a gas-powered mower (but not a whole lot quieter), and it doesn't smell of poorly-combusted gasoline. In all, I feel like it converts the chore of mowing the lawn into more of a stroll through the yard.
I have two complaints: I got a warranty repair for the switch axle which others have explained is poor design. A (second) warranty repair of the switch fixed this problem. The cut is not particularly even. I often cut the same spot twice (or use a very narrow pass) to get it level enough for my taste. Another commenter noted that the key switch is flimsy for its purpose and I agree, but it hasn't caused me any trouble.
Some notes on the redesigned switch: The old switch is what appears in the main product picture today (2009-12-06), a red handle that you hold against the push bar with your right hand. For the redesign, the whole top half of the push bar assembly is redone. The bar is straight across rather than bent up. The main switch is a 2-step process - push a button in on the side and hold a small bar back against the push bar to hold it in place. The flimsy key has been replaced with a more substantial key shown in one of the official product pictures. The receipt for my second warranty repair says item 90551714 "Conversion Kit to Type 2A" was used to put the redesigned switch on my mower.
When I discuss this mower with friends, a few items come up:
1) It still uses energy, so how does it help the environment? Economy of scale. Power plants, even burning coal, burn much cleaner than a 1-cylinder gasoline engine. Most of the smell to which I was accustomed from mowing is from burning gasoline, and everything you can smell is a volatile organic carbon - which is worse than CO2 for global warming.
2) How long does it run? I haven't run it out of power yet. Once I forgot to plug it in after cutting the lawn, and it made it through two passes of about 25 minutes each. Given that I can cut the whole yard in about 25 minutes with a 19" mower, you can surmise that it's not a very big lawn.
3) Is it heavy? I don't think so. It's heavier than the $100 Murray I replaced, but it's lighter than some self-propelled gas mowers I've pushed.
Customer Review: An excellent alternative to gas and oil! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been fighting with gas push mowers for the past ten years and had grown so tired of the maintenance on them that I did all of my mowing with my riding mower. Any places that I couldn't get with the riding mower either got replaced by flower beds or just did not get mowed.
I purchased the CMM1200, opened the box and was amazed that there was nearly zero assembly required, with the only work required being to unfold the handle, tighten a couple of hand-tightened nuts and snap together the catch bag.
The earlier review concerning the battery being held in with only a nylon strap is unfounded, because the styrofoam (which the other reviewer chose to remove for unknown reasons) is there to hold the battery in place.
My biggest reason for purchasing this mower was to stop dealing with gas and oil, but my secondary reason was environmental consciousness. With the second reason in mind, I was very pleased to find that the only piece of packaging which could not be recycled was the plastic bag which the charger was packaged in, inside of a small cardboard box. If B&D could eliminate the use of the plastic bag, they would have an environmentally conscious product packaged in 100% recyclable packing material.
I love the cut quality, the ease of use, the quiet running, the ultra-easy height adjustment and the overall comfort of use.
Great job B&D!
