I purchased my Black & Decker CMM 1000 back in summer of 2000 and in general it has been a terrific lawn mower. I have over 2/3 of an acre of Kentucky Bluegrass and although it doesn't mow it all on one charge, it mowes it very competently on two charges. Between charges is about 2 hours... just the right amount of time for me to do something else anyways.
Now that I have had it for 8 years I probably need a new battery. So, I take a look in the absolutely incompetently written instruction manual and I can't even see where the battery is located for this thing. There are no drawings of the battery's location and nothing written about changing the battery at all. So, I phone B&D Customer Service. I won't say I got the run-around but I will say that the representative told me how easy it is to change the battery -- it's just like changing a car battery. Duh! I have never changed a car battery. So, they send me the battery ($129)which is almost too heavy to carry and I find someone of the male persuasion who does know how to change a car battery and I con (oops! -- ask) him to come over and change the thing. Of course I don't even know where the damn battery is located. The gentleman figures out where the battery actually is located but then, alas, can't open the case because it requires a trax opener (whaaat is that, anyways?) which customer service neglected to mention and the instruction manual neglected to mention at all. Anyways, when the whole thing is completed I will be happier.
In the meanwhile, besides for this, I must say that this mower is 100 times better than a gas mower although you do have to work at it and since the thing is heavy you had better have a level piece of property. It is relatively quiet and doesn't smell at all. What more could you ask?
And yes, I'd buy another one but reading the reviews of the CMM 1200 I would be wary.

Works well but a bit heavy to push due to the battery. But you get used to it. The plastic shroud was severely damaged in transit but Amazon quickly and painlessly refunded the replacement cost. Much better than messing around with gas and oil. Glad I bought this.Customer Review: B&D CORDLESS MOWER

Delivery was on time. The mower worked great right out of the box, as advertised, and continues to work great. I have no complaints. Now I just need to figure a way to charge it using photovoltaics.
