Customer Review: Good, but not top-of-line

I initially reviewed this iron when I bought it, with some complaints of water spatter, the steam not always working, and too high of heat leaving a sheen on my clothes. After about ten months (of the 1 year warranty) the iron sort of shorted out and I needed to contact Applica for a replacement. After a few weeks of back and forth regarding the date code on the iron, I finally received a replacement. The replacement behaves differently than the original. The replacement does not sear the clothes and the steam works really well. There is still some water spatter, though.
For the traits shared by both irons, the weight of the iron is good, with a beefy handle. The Surge of Steam function works really well, and as crazy as this sounds, the most appreciated feature is the nice long cord (10ft) which you can easily wrap up and tuck neatly through the handle for storage.
A graduated container is provided for filling the iron from the tap, and the water fill cap has a rounded "U" shape designed to rest the mouth of a gallon water jug while filling. The only problem with using the jug is that the "Max Fill" line is at the very bottom of the window while horizontal, which combined with the rate of flow tends to result in spilling from the jug.
The controls are easy enough to use, including the Auto-clean, used to purge the water from the tank. I would recommend filling with water and using the Auto-Clean / Surge of Steam features repeatedly when you first receive the iron to blast all the plastic shards out of the tank.
Given the difference between the two irons, and the short life span of the first one, I'm thinking the quality of these is hit-and-miss. Also, to get the replacement, I had to mail back the plug from the iron with a check for $7.50. The plug exceeds USPS "letter" width - so I had to additionally pay parcel rates to ship the plug back. Given how long the claim process took, I had to buy a new iron in the meantime, which interestingly enough worked just as well, albeit with a shorter cord, and it didn't cost much more than I paid for the warranty claim on this iron.

I didn't think I'd like a digital iron, but this one is fantastic. I have always been a fan of Black and Decker irons, and this is no exception. It is heavier than most irons, but that's a good thing. The steam settings are great. The cord swivels, so it stays out of the way. I like the different setting for heat, as they are true to the fabric being ironed. I would highly suggest this iron to anyone.Customer Review: Great iron...if and when it works- unreliable

I bought this iron back in March 09. It worked great for about 3-4 months then the digital display just died. Sent it back under warranty and paid $7.50 for shipping and handling for a replacement. Now the replacement display is malfunctioning. It won't go above level 1. I used to have an iron with a separate water tank for steaming and this iron is just a temporary solution, but I was surprised how great it works. Warms up in about a minute, the digital selection is easy to be done with one hand, steam is ready in a minute as well. I will use it just for a limited time period, but I'll definitely get a same one once I move to another place.
