Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker D6000 All-Temp Steam Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate

Customer Review: Great value
Summary: 4 Stars

Right now there is no "perfect" iron on the market at any price, but for this price, this is one of the best deals I've seen in a long time. I am a professional quilter and purchase at least one iron a year if not more. This iron does a better job at steam than I've seen in my irons for the past few years. Nice weight so I only have to guide it, not press on it to get it to iron. With the volumne of pressing I do, I can not have an iron I have to manually apply pressure to get it to work right. I do wish the iron's sole plate was a bit larger. I also had to purchase (from another source as Amazon didn't carry one) a teflon heat-proof mat so I could lay the iron flat to add water. I noticed these days a lot of irons require being flat to fill, not a fan, but found the mat at Walmart cheap. Only time will tell if this is a good of iron as it appears. If it still works a year from now, yet, two years, fantastic.

My last two irons were the EuroPros which imho is a fantastic iron, it has weight, does a great job in pressing and steaming, but each one only lasted about 9-10 months before the iron would just go off and not come on again. No warning, one minute it works, the next it doesn't. Great iron, but after having two go belly up (and another friend's EuroPro did the same thing), I decided I needed to look for another brand. Not a fan of Rowentas but... bought the expensive Rowenta Pro. It only lasted two weeks before it leaked like a sieve and was returned for a full refund. The other problem with the Pro was the super thick, stiff and unmoving power cord. It made the iron hard to move and the cord was always in the way.

For the price, this is a good deal.

Positive factors:
First of all, I was impressed with the weight of the iron. Lightweight irons require the user to press down, which to me is more tiring that guiding a heavier iron around the ironing board. To me, the substantial weight is a plus.

I also liked the see-through water reservoir, which allows you to see when water is getting low, and prevents over-filling.

The iron heats up very fast and produces lots of steam.

I didn't have any trouble filling it - just poured water slowly into the fill area right from the distilled water bottle.

The burst-of-steam feature is nice, as is the auto-clean system.

Neutral factor:
I'm a bit leery of all these electronics on what is essentially a very simple device. My old-school GE steam iron from 1968 still works great after 40+ years. How long will this one last? 40 years? I doubt it. (In case you are wondering why I got a new one when the old one still works, this one will be used in a different location.) This concern is neither a positive or a negative at this point, because I have no indication as to whether it will be a problem over the long haul or not.

Negative factors:
I don't like the backlit LCD display. You can't read it at an angle. Therefore you either have to tip the iron, or bend over and look at it straight-on to see what the setting is. The blue-on blue display is artistic, but low contrast only compounds the readability issues. LCD calculators are very readable even when viewed at an angle - why can't this be also?

The water-fill system is inconvenient. The iron has to be flat on the soleplate to fill it. Because the iron produces lots of steam, it runs out of water fairly fast if you have a lot of ironing to do or if you are using it at a high temperature. It says right in the instruction book that if you run out of water you should unplug the iron and allow it to return to the standby state before adding more. What? That's insane. Just what I want to do - stand around waiting for the iron to cool down when I just want to get the job finished.

When I first filled it up, a small amount of residual water ran out of the fill area.

I can't see anyway to just turn the iron off without unplugging it. It will turn itself off if left inactive on the soleplate or side for 30 seconds or left inactive for 8 minutes when sitting on the heel. If it can turn itself off, why can't I turn it off? (I usually unplug my iron when I am done with it anyway, so this might not be a big deal. It just strikes me as peculiar.)

Summary: I'm already turned off by the LCD display and the water-fill problems listed above. I am tempted to just give this to my daughter and keep on using the 1968 war horse. However, to be fair, I will give it a bit longer trial period. If, over time, I am inclined to like this product a little more, I will update this review.

Customer Review: Heavier is better

The Black & Decker D6000 Digital Iron is by far one of the best irons I have ever owned. Besides the modern design and LCD capabilities, the iron's heavy weight makes it easier for the iron to move over the fabrics. It smoothly glides in an effortless motion. I was a little concerned about the rounded tip since I am use to iron having the pointed end, but I have to admit it did not really make a difference. I was able to iron collars easily, hitting every inch of material including the corners.

The steam option is unbelievable. It shoots a forceful abundance of steam that can tackle and "flatten" any wrinkle. Filling the water reservoir is a little awkward but I figured the design might be based on the LCD display and you are less likely to short the circuit board on the iron (this is just a guess). The handle has a good grip and is comfortable to hold. The control buttons are easy to push and conveniently placed. The 360 degree swivel cord is great because you will be less likely to get the cord tangled on yourself because you have to keep moving from side-to-side. However, I wish the cord was a bit longer.

Overall I really recommend this iron. It will allow you to iron faster with less effort.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I already have another black and decker brand iron, which I absolutely love as I can iron my husband's heavy cotton chinos in a couple of minutes: a real time saver. So the bar was set very high.

On first handling, I was not used to such a heavy iron at all, but after ironing a couple of chinos, I was beginning to enjoy the ironing! Because it is heavier, it does not maneuver quickly, but I did not have to apply pressure to the iron and with the combination of the steam and spray; I was able to iron a pair of heavy cotton trouser in minutes too! Ironing cotton tee shirts and shirts was very easy too with having to apply very little pressure on the iron. Effortless (almost!)

The steam and spray features were great - very powerful and directed. The temperature gauge is digital, which is managed by two little buttons at the top of the handle: left for reducing the temperature and right for increasing the temperature. I wish they made those buttons a little larger.

I am impressed with the new black and decker iron: recommended if you are fed up of getting a tired arm from ironing.

NB: did they meant to forget a plastic cup for filling the iron? So dont throw away your old one, just in case.
