Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker HH2455 24" Hedge Hog Hedge TrimmerCustomer Review: As good as it sounds Summary: 5 Stars
Like others reviewing this trimmer I worried about the Black & Decker reputation- don't worry, it is as good as it sounds. I have a large yard and many large bushes and long hedges to sculpt. My previous trimmer (Sears 18") didn't die but it was beginning tear the greenery rather than cut, a result of the blade teeth bending away from each other top and bottom. I'm hoping that the "hardened" blades will not have this problem but it will take years to find out.
Best features: dual reciprocating blades really do make a huge difference! The Hedge Hog is heavier than my old one but much less tiring to use- very smooth. The excellent balance helps too. The "pigtail" cord attachment is simple and foolproof- I remember all the times I had to stop and re-attach the cord before. The "in-line" motor design elongates the handle which isn't a problem for me because I have long arms, but it also allows a little extra stretch to reach the very top of the arch in the hedge.
One safety note: the lock-on feature is very positive and stays locked even when you unplug the trimmer! This happened to me when I carelessly sliced through the cord (like butter) and after I spliced the cord back together I almost plugged it in again with the lock on. This could have been very dangerous as I was holding the trimmer. You have to treat this beast with respect or else hire a service. All in all a great job.
A couple of strange notes- my trimmer came without the cute silver paint job illustrated, makes no difference to me. Also, someone should tell Black & Decker that a Hedgehog is an shy, inoffensive European garden critter that eats grubs and earthworms and will roll up in a spiney ball if you get too close.
Customer Review: Awesome tool.... Summary: 5 Stars
UPDATE 2/18/2010:
Just to update, I have used this to cut through very thick ivy, etc., and it is still going, and cutting fairly well. I should also note that I have not maintained this at all. I have not cleaned or oiled the blades, etc., and it still works very well. I am VERY pleased with this and recommend it VERY highly
This is a really great trimmer. It handles thick branches very well. I cut half inch branches easily enough. It is well balanced, and I was even able to use it with one hand when I really had to stretch (I would not recommend this, as it is a bit dangerous). One thing that many people do not consider with these electric tools, sometimes, the extension cord releases easily. This is not the case here, I am happy to report. I am very happy I bought this. It makes my hedge trimming very easy. It is easy to maneuver, and I think you will be very happy using this product.
June 2008 addition:
Okay, almost a year has passed and this thing is still going strong. It cuts like butter....still. It is easily the best garden tool purchase I have made, and I have made some good ones. It does not bog down unless the branches are REALLY thick (read: do not fit between the teeth completely). Look no further and buy this trimmer. It's just great....the only annoyance is that the plug comes out easily using my new extension cord.....ehem....it seems while I was using the trimmer to clear out more ivy than anyone can imagine, the cord got hidden underneath some of the iyv I had not reached and when I did get to it I might not have been.....ehem....paying as much attention.....cough, cough....as I should have, and, well, you know, ehem, the trimmer stopped working. When I looked down I saw the cord was still plugged into the trimmer, but then I noticed the dangling piece of cord about 8 feet down and am happy to report that if needed this thing will cut through a 12 gauge extension cord with ease and better than any wire cutter! Luckily for me, I did not get any kind of shock, etc., (of course, it was plugged into a GFCI outlet). That's the good news. The bad news is I threw out the extension cord which, at 100 feet, costs almost what the trimmer cost. The good news is my friend later informed me that it is an easy fix to splice the wires back together. Bad news is, he told me this AFTER the garbage men took the garbage.....Lesson learned, and I only mention this in the hopes that everyone who reads this takes better care than I did. All joking aside, this could have had a completely different ending, and I am quite lucky to be able to edit this review. I can only imagine what might have happened if I were standing in a puddle, or something (I don't want to test the GFCI). So, since it only cost me a new extension cord, I figure I got away cheap. ;-)
Customer Review: B&D HH2450 Trimmer Summary: 5 Stars
The trimmer's first test was 30-foot-long, five-foot-high, 5-foot-deep hedge at our new home. The hedge had grown up against the house, so in addition to the cosmetic outer and top-side trimming, I needed to cut a good foot-and-a-half of depth off the back side. The long blade made the cosmetic trimming quick and easy, fostering continuous, straight cuts to make shaping easy. The cutting strength easily dealt with the thicker branches on the house side. I am very pleased with this trimmer.
Customer Review: B&D Hedge Hog 24 Summary: 4 Stars
I have a Sears 18" 2.8amp trimmer, but I needed more cutting power so I bought the Hedge hog 24". It was definitely an improvement, not as much blade speed but greater cutting power. Hedge branches from 1/4" were very easy, but 1/2" took some work but still cut. I researched online many trimmers and for the price/usefulness thought this was the best for my money. I have 40-50 ft of hedges on both sides of my yard, but if I had double the hedges, I might have considered a more powerful and heavy duty trimmer.
Customer Review: B&D MEANS POOR QUALITY Summary: 1 Stars
The HH2450 I purchased lasted only 2 seasons. Even with careful use, the cheap plastic gear drive failed and could not be repaired by The Authorized B&D Service Center. Expect poor performance, from B&D's poor design, cheap materials and Mexican manufacturing standards. B&D is NOT the brand to buy.
