Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker MM275 18-Inch 9 amp Electric Mulching MowerCustomer Review: Serves it's purpose Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this to trim areas too tight for my tractor and wanted something less polluting than a gas unit. Light and maneuverable (but the cord has to be dealt with), so far so good.
Customer Review: Simple Solution Summary: 5 Stars
After my husband's death, I moved into a small house, but there was still minimal yard to keep mowed. I had to rely on family or pay to have my yard mowed. I am still able to walk and get around and felt I could still mow. My biggest problem was starting the mower. When I saw this mower I felt it was the answer. Sure enough when it arrived I took it out of the box , read the directions and in a short time I was mowing the mower is light and easy to push. No more gas cans or oil etc. I mow at my pace and can stop at anytime to rest or move something and then with a simple squeeze of the handle I am off again. The electric cord is not a problem I followed the suggestion in the guide and found it is simple to mow and not get tangled up in the cord. Another feature I love is the adjusting wheels some of my lawn is heavier than others. With a simple flip of the leaver and I can adjust the height of the blade. I am saving at least $25.00 a week , and no longer have to depend on others to mow, Not to mention getting some much needed excercise.
Customer Review: Start of 3rd season with this mower Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great little mower. I replaced a Sears cordless which I loved until I had to start buying new batteries for $100 every year. My neighbor's daughter says it looks like I'm vacuuming the lawn--it's so easy to pull and push with one hand. Highly recommended. I fold over the handle to store in a small space in garage. Oh, I also use the recommended cord size. I'm guessing that those who burn out their motors are using a too narrow gauge cord.
Customer Review: Strong for an electric mower Summary: 4 Stars
I found the mower to be great! Lightweight, convenient and has strong mulching capacity even in fairly high grass.
I only wish there was a "universal swivel" attachment to the handle so it would auto transfer when you make turns.
Customer Review: Surprisinly good for a while Summary: 5 Stars
AUG 2009 edit...
I would hhave to drop my rating to 2 star now.
Had mine for about 2.5 years well it finally cooked itself.
There is NO EXCUSE for this kind of design flaw if its overheating/loading it should just shut down.... not kill itself.
The 4 wheel height adjustment while nice, is very prone to dropping down to bottom on the slightest bumpy groud an manuvering.
Even does pretty well in thick grass BUT it obiously has NO thermal/load protection and WILL COOK itself eventually in those conditions. And only being 9 amp not likely to blow a house fuse/breaker first.
My gas mower (Yard Machines... never again) fuel system gunked up and/or died after just a few months....carb cleaner or anything simple was of no use) it was Tropical hot and humid KW summer and so at least back yard lawn had not been cut in 6 month. (also no desire to spend rec time back there for same reasons... still had porches an front yard) Had hoped a gas mower would go on sale but never did, and about half of cost of the Yard Machine garbage to fix it... to likely have it happen again.... and HD here doesn't sell electrics, which is REALLY ODD considering how small Key West lawns are and they sell electric ever other kind of yard thing)
On that near back to wild back yard, it took two passes in certain areas but even in mulch configuration not dischargeing anything still chewwed right through tough knee high St Augustine Grass (AKA crab grass) and assorted vine like weeds.
That is an advatage to electric... it always has full torque available.... it only slightly bogged down... where as gas movers (besides the added mechanical complexity) as soon as it drops below ideal RPM for power they die almost instantly.
This is why heavy duty things like 1000's or tons trains and cruise ships are deisel electric, the deisel needs to run at a fixed RPM for peak output... where as the electric drive motors have full torque from start up to max RPM, making it more practible workable and efficient.
Really amazed at what this mower chewed through remarkably quickly. (It would have been comparatively hours with a gas one constantly near or dying/ contantly yanking to restart)
And enough of it that though grass wasn't wet... just mulching it created lots of moisture from the grass itself, yet turned it over after and clean as a whistle, almost like teflon coated, vs again gas ones, partly due to engine heat, cake up grass debris quite a bit, even straight disharge not mulch.
Longevity remains to be seen but potentially KILLER/very heavy load first two uses I am very impressed, it just buzzed right through it.
(Did more more recently (but still over a month or rainy season) hand weed whacked front yard first and then the near wild back yard cooler second day)
Very quiet, no yanking starter at every stop, and despite some other complaints here no trouble with height adjustment staying put or anything else.
