Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker MM575 Lawn Hog 18-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower

Customer Review: A darn good mower
Summary: 5 Stars

This mower sets up quickly and easily right out of the box. I've never had an electric mower before and wasn't sure if it would be powerful enough. I was very surprised at its cutting ability. The electric power cord takes a little getting use to but not to difficult once you get the hang of it. I found that keeping the cord along the mowed area makes mowing easier. The very light weight of the mower makes reversing course a one hand operation. My only concern now is the mowers longevity, but my initial impression is very favorable.

Customer Review: A good mower with some problems
Summary: 3 Stars

The MM575 definitely a good mower, especially for small yards. As others have mentioned its advantages are - no gas, clean, quieter, easy maneuverability, good range of settings to cut the grass, quick assembly. I bought the side bag assembly (BA-075) and a 50 foot 14-guage extension cord as well. In my experience the side bag assembly is a must to cut taller grass. The mulching function (when used without the bag) is very good when the grass is much shorter. The bag is a bit small though and even with my small yard (only about 400 sq ft) I have to empty it twice.

The one big problem I have experienced with this mower is that motor tends to die after a year or two. I have had this mower for three years now and for the second time the motor has died. The first time it was covered under the two year warranty (barely), but now within another year of repair, the motor has died again and the repair cost would be 80$. I was told by the repair center that a wrong guage cord can burn out the motor; I don't believe this is the problem (14 guage 50 feet cord) in my case and think that there is a problem with the reliability of the motor with this product.

Despite this experience, I might go in for another Black and Decker mulching mower (I may just buy the MM875 instead).

Customer Review: A great electric mower
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been mowing lawns for 30 years. The first lawnmower I used was my dad's gas mower. When I got married and got my own home, I bought one just like his. After five seasons of messing with spark plugs and "winterizing" it and having it not start in the spring for various reasons, I was fairly fed up. When the handle broke off in the middle of mowing one day, I knew it was time for a change but...what to change to? While I mulled that over, I went to my neighbor's and borrowed his ancient Black & Decker electric and finished the job. His B&D electric was not much to look at (it looked like a fez riding around on the top of a fat skateboard) but it did the job quietly and quickly and I was impressed. When I went up to the hardware store I was even more impressed: the cheapest decent gas mowers were $250 or more while a new Black & Decker electric was $150 or so. I bought the B&D and it served me very well for over 10 seasons. Sure, it would have a hard time when the grass was tall and wet, but so would any mower. The best advantages, though, were the light weight (I could push and maneuver it with one hand) and the mulching (no clippings to rake or bag). This spring, though, the engine died. The obvious replacement? The newest version of the same mower. The color is orange instead of green now and it's a little sleeker looking, but everything else is the same. I figure that, if this one will last me 10 years, I'll have spent about $20 a year on it. As much as gas costs these days, that seems like a very small price.

Customer Review: B&D 18 in Electric Mower
Summary: 5 Stars

Black & Decker Lawn Hog 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower #MM575

This is a great product. I have a medium size lot. All areas can easily be reached with a 100 ft extension cord. The 12 amp mower is powerful enough for my thick zoysia grass. The convenience of electric over gas is hard to beat.

Customer Review: B&D MM575 does the job
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this mower to replace gas powered mower that was given away by my stepson to a girl he wanted to help out. Have used it 3 or 4 times and it does the job well. A bit less noisy that the gas one. It takes longer to mow because of the extension cord that needs to be moved around, but I think the tradeoff is worth it.
