Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear BagCustomer Review: A Great Lawnmower!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This lawnmower is hassle free. It comes with everything. All you have to do is take it out the box and plug it up!!!And of course buy a Long Extension cord. The rear bag is easy to assemble if you want to use it. You just pull the mulch plug out the back of the lawnmower and put the rear bag on and go! The height adjustment is awesome. It adjust all 4 wheels at one time. No Gas(2.20 cent per Gal.) No oil..No spark plugs. This is a smart buy!!
Customer Review: A Nice Product Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Craftsman alternative to this but it is essentially the same mower. I bought it to have something lightweight I could carry up and down the stairs from the basement because I lack an outside enclosure. It works wonderfully for my small 1/4 acre yard and managing the cord is not very hard except for some annoying obstacles (old tree trunks, etc). My only complaint so far would be the bag. The angle it comes in at just seems to make you empty it long before its filled.
Customer Review: A cheap piece of junk !!! Summary: 1 Stars
I recently purchased the Black & Decker 19 inch electric mower. On the second use I hit one of the sprinkler heads. It totally trashed the motor. Knocked it out of alignment and tore up the magnets. It is now a $250 piece of junk on the lawn mower repair guy's junk pile.
This mower is very cheaply made. The shell and most parts are plastic. The motor casing is very thin sheet metel, a few steps above tin foil.
Stay away from this product !!!
Customer Review: A good buy, so far... Summary: 5 Stars
I'm writing this review after completing the first full mow of my yard with this machine.
I previously used a model MM575, and was happy with that. But the 575 was getting old, had been repaired several times, and finally suffered a breakdown that would have required replacing the motor (at half the cost of a new mower). So, I figured it was time to upgrade.
The 875 has all the features I like about the 575: it's very light (I don't miss the self-propell feature on my old gas mowers), quiet, does the job, and doesn't leave me smelling of gasoline fumes. I assume it will also be easy to repair (I have a DeWalt parts distributer only a few minutes away). It also does a reasonable job of mulching (although not as good as my old Toro gas mowers).
The 875 seems more powerful, more quiet, and smoother running. My stepson claims it feels sturdier. The handle bars have an adjustment to accomodate tall people, although I wish it adjusted even further (we're all over 6 ft in this family). Setting the cutting height is incredibly easy, but I needed to read the manual to figure out how to do it :-)
One piece of electric-mower advice: invest in a heavy-gauge cord. Swapping up to a 12ga extension cord solved all my 575 problems with bogging down the mower and blowing circuit breakers.
I think you'll like this mower!
Customer Review: A great little mower which doesn't pollute. Summary: 5 Stars
I looked long and hard at all the mowers. With a commitment to clean air and such, I was willing to overlook a few of the problems or shortcomings of electrics vs. gas. I was concerned that my 1/4 acre would be too large for an electric, and just about everyone told me it WAS too large. But I went with this one anyway, and so far, I'm glad I did. The nice thing about the corded version is that it is a lot cheaper than the battery version, and a lot lighter. I would draw a parallel between a car with an automatic transmission vs. a car with a stick; the automatic is easier and more convenient, but it's more expensive and has more potential problems. Americans have always seemed to want to pay extra for convenience and ease, and in so doing have hurt the environment and themselves, with no exercise. I also heard that replacing batteries was very costly. Managing the cord is an issue, but for me, not a big one. The mulching feature works great; no more clumps of grass on the lawn. And it's very quiet, compared to the gas guzzlers. Do yourself, your neighbors and the environment a favor by getting this mower. Take a chance and be different. You don't have to do what everyone else is doing! Incidentally, my second mower is a Scott's Classic Reel (push) mower, which is great too!
