Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear BagCustomer Review: A quiet grass muncher Summary: 4 Stars
Delivery was extremely fast and convenient, which was initially a concern for a larger item like this. Quality and durability of components is good. A bit frustrating that the blade did not come from the factory fully sharpened.
Customer Review: A very good lawnmower Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased my second Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog about 2 1/2 months ago because I was completely satisfied with the first one that I bought about 9 years ago! When the motor needed repair for the third time on my old mower (not bad for 9 years of service) I decided to buy another Lawn Hog. I ordered the lawnmower from Amazon on a Sunday and it came 5 days later and this was with free shipping!
The cut is clean and even and I find the rear bag very easy to use (I don't understand why others have written that it is awkward to use this bag). I live in a single family house (8,500 sq ft lot) and an 80 foot cord is sufficient to cover the entire yard. I chose to stay with the corded model because I did not want the extra weight and time limitation of the battery model(s). After 9 years I have my mowing pattern down pat and have no problem managing the cord.
Most local appliance repair shops can service the motor if repairs are needed (brushes, armature, etc) and the ones that do this will usually sharpen the blade as part of the service.
As expected, I have been very pleased with the lawnmower and highly recommed it to anyone who prefers not to use a gas mower.
Customer Review: All the mower 90% of people probably need Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great mower. Easy to use, and the cord is not really that difficult to deal with. Not having to deal with gas, oil, plugs etc. more than makes up for the minor incovenience of a cord. I have read reviews of this mower that say only consider it if your yard is a quarter-acre or less. I would say that if you can reach every part of your yard with a 100-foot cord, taking into account your outlet locations and a little extra cord for turns, you are a prime candidate for this mower. The bagger and mulcher functions both work great. It is not powered, but is fairly lightweight and easy to push. The only negatives I can come up with are these: The bag is a little small; With my 1/3-acre yard I have to empty it about 4 times. However, a larger bag would make it more difficult to maneuver. If you don't like the bag, just remove it and mulch away! Also, it is not as quiet as I thought it would be. This is not to say that it is loud, but it sounds about like a large box fan on medium speed. Certainly it is no louder than a gas mower, and the sound is a different quality.
Customer Review: Amazed Summary: 5 Stars
I'm amazed that I'm writing a review about a lawn mower, but we're so impressed with this thing, and given that it's less polluting that the gas mower I've used all my life, I'm all for turning others onto this thing. Having never used an electric mower in my life, I wasn't sure about 1. the weight (it's not self propelled): 2. the cord; and 3. overall power. None have been a problem. It's easy to push around, you quickly figure out your "cord management", and the thing cut through 4 inches of grass pretty darn well. I'm still not quite believing that I will never have to deal with gas, gas mixes, draining the tank for Winter, spark plugs, not starting, swearing at a machine, etc., etc. Kudos to Black & Decker for building this thing.
Customer Review: An excellent solution, much better than gas powered Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned this mower for three years. It cuts great. Electric is a great alternative to gas powered, if it's practical. You can mow any time of the day without worrying about noise, you never have to worry about oil changes, running out of gas, or storing gas for that matter. Also, clean up is easier because one can flip this item over (in the grass, when it's not plugged in) to clean it out and not worry about flooding any engine or spilling gas. Of course, the pain is the cord but if you have a small lawn, it's not a big deal. This mower works great.
