Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear BagCustomer Review: As Advertized Summary: 5 Stars
The lawn mower was simple to assemble and to use. It was larger and noiser than I had expected. It is powerful enough for any of the jobs on my modest sized lawn and unlike others I had no problems with the grass catcher. It is good buy.
Customer Review: Awesome and Easy to Use Summary: 5 Stars
I love this mower. It came almost all put together. All my husband had to do was attach the handle. It's such a lite mower and it's also very quiet. It cuts great and does the job. I definitely recommend this product.
Customer Review: B & D MM875 19" Corded Electric Mower - Solid Performer Summary: 4 Stars
I remember mowing my Dad's lawn with a corded electric mower when I was a kid when my dad had a old short wheel base, flip handle, Toro belt drive twin blade, circa mid 60's. Ten years ago I deceided to replace my gas mower with an corded electric mower after remembering the hassle free operation of my dad's mower - no plugs, stale gas in the spring, and variable starting mojo.
Just recently I started searching for a replacement for my 10 year old Craftsman 18" electric which was all used up. I discovered that the Black & Decker MM875 (at a lower price) and the Sears model appeared to be identical. Sadly, Toro no longer has a corded electric. Yard Machines also has some offerings.
Before purchasing I evaluated and test mowed with my neighbor's new gas 6.5hp Honda powered mower to have a reference and to see if it was worth considering. Powerful sounding (louder than I was used to) and the exhaust gas output was very noticable. Heavier feeling than my old unit, it required some muscular upper body wrestling to mow my yard which is sloped and landscaped. I also detected some unit flexing and blade noise. It still required slowing of pace in heavy grass with a sharp blade so I was not convinced that it's power was that much of an advantage.
I purchased the MM875 and will comment on the features and functionality as the reliability and durablity will only demonstrate themselves over time. This model is lighter than my old unit and feels like it too. It could be that better weight distribution, ergonomics / leverage at the handle, the shape of which I grew to like after using, and the 8" rear wheels. Any way, the combo is an improvement over my older unit and requires much less upper body wrestling than before. I like the fact that the cutting deck is easier to clean and because it is well designed plastic, will not corrode. The noise level is about the same as my old electric which is still substantially quieter than my neighbors new Honda powered mower. The height ajustability is excellent although I will not be using it myself. I use the mulcher mode to return the nutients to the soil and mow at the highest setting to conserve water requirments (self shading), promote my lawns health by giving the grass more surface area for nitrogen fixing bacteria and earthworm positive environment to receive their under soil benefits.
Over all I am pleased with the performance, features, and improvements of the MM875 over my old unit and would purchase it again. Time will tell about the reliability but as with all corded electrical motors, give them a good power source (cord & outlet) and it will give you good service. Here are a couple of things I have learned about corded electric mowing.
(1) The electrical cord used absolutely has to be large gauge conductor as specified in the owner's manual and in good condition. It only takes a minute to check your cord with a multimeter. Any contractor can tell you a horror story about burning up a good tool with a bad cord. Don't be tempted to use that old small gauge thing you have used for your Weed Eater or Christmas lites just because you have it. This is a 12amp motor and damage will result if used with a defective or small gauge cord.
(2) Locate the closest electrical outlet(s) front and rear and get a cord that is long enough to reach the farthest area but not overly long. If you can get by with a 75', that is better than a 100'. I use a 12awg 100' but if possible for you get the shortest one that will work. The shorter the cord length, the less amperage loss and the longer the motor lasts.
(3) If the grass to be cut is longer than a couple inches above cut height or very dense or wet, go slower / overlap your last swath and listen to the motor rpm's. Heavy motor loads cause extra heat which shorten motor life. The cooling fan is part of the motor so slowing / loading the motor down decreases its ability to carry away the now increased heat.
(4) Start mowing closest to the electrical outlet and gradually mow away for best cord management. Use your common sense and you can enjoy the benefits of corded electric mowing.
Customer Review: B & D MM875 lawn mower Summary: 4 Stars
It works great. This is my 2nd B&D 19" electric mower. I don't have a large lawn to cut and I like not having to buy gas and oil or pulling a cord to start it. The mower had a great price and there was no shipping costs. The mower arrived within the time period given.
Customer Review: B&D Lawn Hog 18" Electric Mower Summary: 4 Stars
This is a replacement for the same unit that I owned for 12 years. That unit was damaged when an object broke the plastic casing, which could not be replaced due to age (no longer available). The mower has served me well in a residential southern setting, regardless of the time between mowings. One caution, however. I have had to pay a local authorized repair shop $90 every 12-24 months to overhaul the unit, replacing the blade, the electric switch, damaged wheels, etc.
