Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker NHT518/NHT518L 18-Volt Cordless Electric Hedge TrimmerCustomer Review: BHunt Summary: 5 Stars
As an older person (age 86) its light weight and strong battery has been a great advantage over my corded hedge clipper. Added advantage is the battery can also be used with my B & D chain saw.
Customer Review: Battery Issues Summary: 4 Stars
FYI-My spouse the electrical engineer, tells me that rechargeable batteries must be fully discharged before recharging to gain maximum run time.
We have the B&D Hedge Hog 18V grass trimmer and are now purchasing the cordless hedge trimmer as well so we can alternately use the recharger for both tools. When I fully discharge the battery on the grass trimmer and then use the recharger (we also purchased an extra battery to have full power in reserve at all times,) I find the run time on the batteries is just as expected. I can run the trimmer about 30 - 45 minutes before losing power. He also told me that when you don't fully discharge the battery before recharging the first time, the battery may not hold a full charge again. I don't know if this is true or not, but that's how we do it and it seems to work.
If you have trouble with a short run time on your cordless tools, perhaps this tip will help you solve that problem.
I agree the switch design results in hand fatigue, which is a problem for me since I have arthritis in both hands. I will show my spouse the tip on this site to modify the switch. We tie the switch into an open position with a piece of twine that I keep on the tool, to run the battery down to zero before recharging. That prevents me from having to hold the tool in a run position until the battery is dead.
Customer Review: Battery life is a huge disappointment!!! Summary: 1 Stars
What good is a powerful trimmer if the battery only lasts a few minutes? I charged this fully when I first got it. It never lasted for more than 15 minutes of light to moderate duty hedge trimming. I have had it less than 6 months, and now it lasts for five minutes! I let the battery run down before I charge it, but I do not tie a piece of twine to the power switch or hold it until it is completely dead (which isn't easy on your hands). I wait until it can no longer cut the hedge and can barely move. What's the point of having this if I have to hold the switch down or tie it down for 5 to 10 minutes after each use just to completely drain the battery? When it works, it's fine, but no way did this last for me as some reviewers have stated. NiCad batteries do have a memory effect, but this battery never lasted very long even after the initial full charge. Also, it's too much work to completely drain this battery of all power if that's what must be done. Until something better comes along, take a pass on this. You will be disappointed, if not initially, then a few weeks or months down the road.
Customer Review: Be wary of reviews by people that just purchased this item! Summary: 1 Stars
I have had this unit for almost a full year. I have used it about 12 times now. The first time was good; neat not having a cord. The second time alright. The third time the battery petered out after 15 minutes. As it is now, the battery doesn't hold a charge just sitting on the shelf even though you might have charged it fully before putting it away. I just went to use it one last time... it lasted all of 5 minutes. Who wants to sit around waiting for 3 hours for a battery to charge and then bam!, get right to work before it loses any power... and I have tried that too... it konks out after about 20 minutes on a "full charge" now and the last ten minutes of that is not very powerful. I'm am totally disgusted with product, and that is why I marched right into the house to write this review.
Customer Review: Black & Decker Codrless 18v Hedge Trimmer-a good purchase Summary: 5 Stars
Thus far, it does what I expected. I have a number of the B&D 18v tools (blower, line-trimmer, riciprocal saw). By having several batteries and charges (one, sometimes two, coming with each purchase), it allows continued operation. The hedge-trimmer is long enough to be efficient and seems powerful enough for ordinary hedge trimming.
