Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker NHT518/NHT518L 18-Volt Cordless Electric Hedge TrimmerCustomer Review: Full charge only lasts 15 min; hope you have a lot of free time Summary: 1 Stars
I've bought several hedge trimmers; I am writing this review to warn you of my dissatisfaction with this model.
I bought this rechargable version to eliminate the inconvenience of a cord; I paid about $83, and the motor burned up within the first week. Also worth mentioning is that each full charge only lasted about 10 minutes, so for my several sculpted bushes I had to charge it 4 times (at 6 hours per charge); unfortunately the motor died (it became hot and had a burnt smell when it quit working).
This was bought to replace an electric hedge trimmer that worked for a few years without any maintenence (about $30), though I inadvertently cut a couple of $15 power cords. Also the power cord would become dislodged frequently due to the vibrations.
Eventually I bought a gas powered hedge trimmer. It can handle large limbs, BUT it is very heavy. I feel that is the only disadvantage to gas, but it is more durable than any other model I have used. If you price compare it's the best deal considering that it cuts up to 3/4" branches.
Unless you have just a single hedge, consider buying a sturdier model. A gas powered model with a shoulder strap is my preference. I believe you will be more satisfied in the end.
Customer Review: Gardener Summary: 4 Stars
It has good power and the fact that it is cordless affords great freedom for the user. I do wish it came with a shorter blade (16 or 18")
Customer Review: Glad I Got It Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second B&D cordless product and I am quite pleased. Cordless is so much easier and a whole lot faster. It did the job and actually a better than my old hedge trimmer that had a cord. Since we have red ozone days half of the summer I feel a lot better using something easier on the air quality too.
Customer Review: Good product except the trigger arrangement! Summary: 4 Stars
This product performs as advertized, has plenty power and met my expectations except the trgger safety release! You have to work the safety catch before you can pull the trigger to operate the trimmer. I found this very awkward and actually creats more of a safety hazard trying to fumble with the safety release switch if you are turning the unit on and off when moving from one shrub to another and the distraction takes away from working safely. After my first 10 minutes of use and getting aggravated with this unfriendly designed switch, I went into the housing and removed the safety slide/spring and it now works like a charm. I also wished a spare battery was included in the package to have a fresh charge ready to go!
Customer Review: Good trimmer Summary: 4 Stars
Black and Decker has a few cordless hedge trimmers so I was a bit confused which to try. This was their latest model and boasted a 40 minute run time so I decided to go for it. The product worked great. I charged the battery the full 6 hours required when you first get it. What's nice about it is after the initial charge the full charge time is 3-6 hours, but the unit can left charging indefinitely without damaging the unit. The unit performed admirably. It cut beautifully and the charge lasted the 40 minutes. The Hedge Hog breezed thru my bushes with ease. If I have two criticisms, they are 1) you have to keep your hand squeezed on the handle while using it - not a big deal cuz your hand is there anyway, and 2) (and more importantly) the unit isn't light. After about fifteen minutes or so, my arms got a bit fatiuged. Still, the criticisms are minor, and I'd highly recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't want to deal with the gas or electric powered models.
