Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw

Customer Review: Best ever for safety and fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a small female and have chain sawed since 1976. I didn't realize until buying this pole saw - how much time I spent making 100% sure the ladder position and my position and the branch position were all safe as I could make them before cutting. Not that I'm chicken, but I've always had BIG properties and ANY injury would result in lost work time.

This little baby practically eliminates all that, because even without the last extension - you are 10 feet out of harms way. If the branch can't possibly fall on you or slam the ladder out from under you, you can just zip, zip, zip. The ad quantifies this by saying you can cut 100 - 1 inch branches. BUT, you can also cut a 20 inch round limb. Just oil the chain and rest the unit on the branch, and pull the trigger. It's own weight will eventually cut thru. It's just a little 10" chain, but when oiled she just works her little head off.

Battery time. I didn't time the first use, but it was long enough to fill my yard with debris that took all day to clean up and barrel, plus I took it to a neighbors house, went up on their roof and sawed till it quit, so they could spend the next day barreling theirs for the next day "green" pickup. I wanted it spent so I could re-charge it to use again the next day. I'd guess it ran about an hour first time.

Package instructions say it takes 5 charges to reach it's maximum charge.
The evening it arrived, I charged it 9 hours per instructions. Instructions say: "After the initial charge, under normal usage, your battery should be fully charged in 3 to 6 hours. If the battery is run-down completely, it may take up to 6 hours to become fully charged."

They are exactly right. I tried at 3 hours (after having it run-down completely and it needed more. So I plugged it back in for 3 hours and it ran perfect again. I kept track of the 5 charges, a 9 hr and four 6 hr. Now, the first time it hesitates, I stop and plug it in and set a little timer next to it. Overcharge is not a good idea for battery life either. I don't take the battery CHARGER inside the house, but I DO take the timer, so when it goes off, I go out and unplug.

Book says: "To prolong battery life, avoid leaving the battery on charge for extended periods of time (over 30 days without use). Although overcharging is not a safety concern, it can significantly reduce overall battery pack life."

"The battery will reach optimum performance after being cycled 5 times during normal usage. There is no need to run the batteries down completely before recharging. Normal usage is the best method of discharging and recharging the batteries."

Backk to the chain saw. My only complaint is having to manually oil the chain. BUT they did put a heavy rubber band on the chain cover to hold a little bottle of oil and the allen wrench to tighten the chain. So I just filled it with my Chain Saw oil and a few drops will do ya. I paid $20 more for this 10-30-07 but I don't care. I LOVE IT. Plus it comes with a big black bag, that holds all 3 lengths and a couple of batteries and you can put it in your trunk! Ever wonder what you would do on a backroad with a tree limb blocking the road? I'm covered!! ha

This actually happened last week to some guy coming towards me. I can't tell you his look of surprise when Miss 65 plus, popped her trunk, came out with a pole saw, slammed in the battery, made 3 quick cuts and SMILED!!! He threw the pieces off the road, while I put it back in my trunk and we were both on our way. A nice memory.

UPDATE; I really recommend using a Brother labeler to number and date your batteries. I have 9 now, but when I got the last 6, I labeled them all and I'm glad I did, because the 3 oldest one are the old technology and always take 6 hrs to charge. So I use them last and leave them plugged in till bedtime. Also, now I won't be upset when the old 2004 ones finally kick the bucket. Ya know, time flys, and when you know a battery lasted 6-7-8 years you get to say - NOT BAD.

Customer Review: Best money I've spent in a long time
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a 10-acre, naturally forested plot with about 3.5 acres cleared leaving a long perimeter of trees and heavy brush as well as a good number of trees left within the clearing. I own an assortment of tools, including a quality 20 inch gas powered chainsaw, an electric chainsaw, and a wide assortment of "man-powered" tools. I've used the NPP2018 for about a month and have trimmed well over 200 tree limbs from 1 to 8 inches. In the past, I used a "man-powered" pole saw or resorted to the unsafe practice of climbing and cutting using the wrong tools. Simply put, the NPP2018 makes my job so much easier and safer and considerably reduces the time needed to accomplish this task. I ordered an extra battery and it is definitely needed if you have heavy cutting to do--one battery lasts me about 1 to 1.5 hours of steady cutting. Everything about this tool is quality for the money, including the carrying/storage case which neatly fits the three sections. You do need to manually oil the chain each time you use it, but that's easy and no problem for me. Plenty of power and cuts very fast until the battery runs down. So far my chain remains sharp, but I will soon buy a spare chain (of course, someone local can professionally sharpen these chains just like with larger chainsaws). The only regret I have is not finding this item years ago!

Customer Review: Better than expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I received the pole saw in two days from ordering it. I have used it for about 5 hours so far clearing over hanging limbs on the road to my home. I was really impressed with the battery life and the speed the saw cut the branches. I have three other batteries but I was ready to take a break when the battery needed changing. The battery lasted about 40 minutes of run time. I would highly recommend this pole saw. Well worth the money.

Customer Review: Big Time Worker
Summary: 4 Stars

The pole saw does the job it says it does. The only problem we had with it, it is slightly heavy for us to handle. Of course my husband and I are up in age. I am sure someone younger would have no problem. We were cutting small branches above our head high in our tree and after holding it up it got heavy for us. I find the plastic handle upon extension not as rigid as I think it should be. Would I tell someone to buy it yes. But for an older couple like ourselves get someone to help you. Make no mistake this is not a toy but a chain saw on a pole and it can cause much damage if not used properly and handled safely.

Customer Review: Black & Decker 18 volt Cordless Eltectric Pole Chain Saw
Summary: 4 Stars

Very pleased with the pole saw. Does everything I wanted it to do with out having to pull an electric cord around or putting mixgas in a little 2-cycle engine. The only draw back is the battery life. If purchased buy an extra battery.
