Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker NST2018 Grass Hog 12-Inch 18-Volt Cordless Electric String Trimmer with 2 BatteriesCustomer Review: B&D Grasshog Cordless Trimmer Summary: 5 Stars
This trimmer, with the 2 batteries supplied, has sufficient ability and duration to easily finsh my 1/2 acre lot. In fact, depending on how much actual trimming is required, one battery may all that's needed.
I was pleasantly surprised by the power of the unit. 'Cordless' often means 'power-less', but that's definitely not the case here.
There are two features worth mentioning: first, the line advances automaticaly as needed so there's no need to 'bump'. Second, a simple pull and twist converts the trimmer to an edger. Both functions work well and are more than adequate for my needs.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
Customer Review: B&D Grasshog Trimmer Summary: 5 Stars
The Grasshog works better than I expected, and does get 20 minutes per battery charge. Very pleased with it.
Customer Review: B&D String Trimmer great for typical suburban lot (part of Package w Blower + 2 batteries) Summary: 5 Stars
NOTE: This review is for the 'packaged deal' of ack & Decker Cordless String Trimmer + Cordless Blower + two 18 volt Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. This is a Great Value!
A big factor in this purchase decision was that I already owned the B&D Cordless 18 v Hedge Trimmer, so the batteries and chargers are interchangeable. I have since used the Black & Decker Cordless String Trimmer 3 times, to include edging my sidewalks. It works well & the battery lasts 10 to 20 minutes, after which I easily pop in the other charged battery. Edging takes the most power, and before the end of the battery's charge the useful work or speed of the string is too low, although there is still plenty of low speed operation left in the battery, it is not enough to edge. I recommend doing the edging first, and as the power diminishes, then switch to trimming until the battery is as too low to spin the string fast enough for cutting grass & weed leaves.
The B&D String Trimmer works well, and I can easily edge my ~100 foot (30 meter) sidewalk & trim those areas the mower can easily cut. It is light weight and the on switch + safety is not hard & tiring to depress like some are. It is well made enough to last quite a few years given my modest needs. For those that complain it is insufficient for their (imagined?) 1000 acre ranch's bush whacking, well, no kidding!
NOTE: These batteries are 18 v Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), so they have memory effects. Ni-Cads will last hundreds, if not maybe 1000 charge cycles if you completely flatten (discharge) the battery prior to charging. What I do is take the Weed Whacker's partially discharged battery, after it can't spin the string fast enough, and put it in the package's included Cordless Blower & let it run until the battery is flat. Then, I charge it. This causes the Ni-Cd to 'remember' that it was totally flat before it was charged and then the complete discharge becomes the floor charge level and not some higher partially charged level. It is like a bucket slowly getting filled with sand (discharge level) so that it holds less & less water (charge).
Customer Review: B&D battery powered weed whacker Summary: 5 Stars
It performs better than expected and battery life is longer than advertised. All in all, very satisfied.
Customer Review: B&D cordless grass trimmer.. Summary: 4 Stars
Going cordless...After a few charges...this cordless trimmer performed very well. It's 12" cutting path makes trimming quick and easy. The two batteries that come with it are very useful if you need to pick up the power after the first one starts to fade...about 20 minutes. With the high cost of gas these days, this cordless trimmer costs less to run and it is much quieter that a gas powered trimmer..I'm now thinking of buying other cordless B&D products that require this battery..hedge trimmer, blower, etc...
