Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker NST2018 Grass Hog 12-Inch 18-Volt Cordless Electric String Trimmer with 2 BatteriesCustomer Review: 18-volt system is inferior Summary: 3 Stars
My yard is quite small, and I cut the whole thing with cordless trimmers. As my old Ryobi began to age, I got a 12-volt Grass Hog. It proved particularly good at cutting the thick Zoysia grass that I planted in desperation in the front yard.
When the Ryobi died, I went looking for another Grass Hog. The 12-volt model was sold out, and would have cost more, so I picked up the 18-volt. It's nice to have two batteries, but they are NiCads. That means they have a "memory". The second battery is useless in this context, because you really need to drain the battery to retain its charging capacity. It takes 9 hours to charge a battery.
When I start out, this model has lots of zip, perhaps too much. By the end, it's barely cutting. The cut is not as even, and it won't do my whole front yard.
Fortunately, I still have the 12-volt to finish up. Its lead-acid battery is not damaged by partial drain. I highly recommend the 12-volt system over this one. It starts out cutting more evenly, and stays at roughly that level longer.
Customer Review: 2 Batteries make this awesome Summary: 5 Stars
This is a powerful device that attacks unwanted growth and feeds the line automatically. The 2 batteries ensure you will not have to wait hours to finish the project.
Customer Review: 30 Mins of Use Summary: 3 Stars
I got 30 mins out of one battery on a full charge. Kind of disappointing.
Customer Review: 5 Stars and Then Some! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are wondering if you should buy this product and can't make up your mind...buy. This is the perfect solution for anybody who can not handle the weight or is unable to start a gas powered trimmer easily. It works so much better than I had ever expected and our lawn has never looked so good.
Customer Review: A "Qualified" 5 Stars (Updated) Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, first for Amazon itself: What a great place to shop! I've shopped Amazon for years and have always been extremely satisfied with Amazon's service - quality, value and so far, perfect customer service.
UPDATE:
I've had and used the trimmer for a few months and have found that after using and recharging the batteries a few times, the batteries seem to last a little longer between charges. Still works great and I feel safe in saying that this is a good, if not excellent buy (still can't say it is a "Hog").
Now for the Trimmer.
This is a replacement for a gas powered trimmer and so far, it really works well. I said the trimmer rated a "qualified" 5 stars, and here are the caveats:
1. To call this trimmer a "Grass Hog" is stretching the truth. It's more like a grass piglet; but for me, with a small yard, it works great. However, if you have a really large yard, it may not be what you want. Having had to wait to receive the trimmer, I had a patch of grass (about 2'x8')that grew to about 6" or 8" in height, and really seemed to drag the battery down quickly - fortunately it comes with two batteries.
2. The automatic string feature is nice, but it seems to use way more string than necessary, especially when trimming the curb, sidewalk and driveway (sounded like it was continually feeding string). Again, for a small yard, it works nicely, but if you have a really large yard, just know it isn't a "HOG" and will very likely run out of string quickly.
Other than those two caveats, it seems to be, for the price, a great little trimmer, and doesn't pollute the atmosphere. It doesn't require lots of pulling on a starter rope (along with the associated language necessary to start a stubborn gas trimmer), is fairly well balanced, light, almost noiseless and really, a joy to use.
