Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector

Customer Review: Energy Audit Product
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is excellent for determining where heating/air conditioning dollars are escaping from homes. It measures temperature differentials and will identify where insullation need be added. It also will identify where expensive leaks are located so they may be stopped.

I believe the tool is best utilized in extreme heat or extreme cold and instantly shows how to make a home more efficient from heat gain or heat loss. This product does the same job as the infra-red gun TV screens the utilities use to identify problems but different in that it displays information via a digital numerical tempertature read out. Black and Decker TLD1000 information is quality information provided at greatly reduced price.

This device also will read temperatures of appliances, power panels and anything that temperature readings may indicate power usage to identify home power leaks.

Customer Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this based on the great reviews, but totally DID NOT realize the greatness of this tool until it arrived.

In short, when you turn it on, it uses whatever you are pointing at as a reference temperature, and then when you are scanning walls/etc it actually projects a colored dot onto the wall indicating if it is colder or hotter than the reference (you can adjust the sensitivity to 1, 5, or 10 degrees). Also, it is very accurate.

Absolutely fabulous. This is one of those tools that I know I'll be finding uses for many years from now. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Find all your leaks the easy way
Summary: 5 Stars

Want to find out where all those little drafts are coming from without having to crawl around on the floor or get out a ladder? This handy little device is so easy to use, just "point and shoot" and you'll see where there is a variance in the temperature on most surfaces. Point it around the edges of a door to see if your weather stripping needs to be replaced. Point it around your windows to see if there are gaps that need to be filled in there. We had a fan installed at the peak of a room where the vaulted ceiling comes together and this device showed us an area on one side where we needed to use some of that spray on foam stuff Dow Chemical Co. 157854 Do it Best Triple Expanding Foam Sealant to get a better seal because cold air was getting in. It doesn't work well on shiny surfaces because of the reflection, so the instructions suggest putting a piece of masking tape over the area before pointing at it. If you point it at a window it just shows the temperature of the window.

This detector is very easy to use. When you turn it on, whatever you're pointing it at is the reference point and that is the reference temperature. It shows the temperature in a little LED window. Then, there are three settings, 1, 5 or 10 degrees that you choose on a little gauge right on the front of the unit. This determines how much of a difference there has to be from the reference point in order to register an alert which is a red or blue colored beam. The beam is green when pointed at your reference point and will stay green until you move it to an area that is colder which will turn it blue, or warmer which will turn it red. So this works just as well in the summer as in the winter. In the summer you can see where hot air is leaking into your nice air conditioned room and in the winter where cold air is leaking in. It's also a good way to see if your refrigerator has any leaks around the door.

If you're interested in cutting your energy bills and finding out easily where those leaks are, this is a great little device

Customer Review: Finding thermal leaks
Summary: 5 Stars

Unfortunately I have not had the chance to use the detector yet for a serious test. I can hardly wait for cold weather, but as of this date, the temperature difference has been too close to show off the device's capabilities to best advantage and to give a good review.

Customer Review: Gadget I didn't know I needed
Summary: 5 Stars

We are currently remodeling my parents house and trying to make it more heat efficient.
I got this thing and pointed it at the window sills, door sills, sockets, the cats and whatever
I could find. Its pretty cool how it shows you where you need to insulate or weatherseal.
Then after you're done you point it at your completed project and see the results.

It's easy to operate and gives you the digital temperature and the backlight for the display
changes colors as the temp rises or falls from your reference point.

Next time I come back from a motorcycle trip I'm gonna use it on my wife to see if it can
determine how mad she is.... I'll keep ya updated
