Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker TRO651 Toast-R-Oven, White

Customer Review: I've Had It With Black & Decker Products!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the third Black & Decker product in a row that has failed shortly after purchase. My previous B&D toaster oven was inexpensive and the toaster option failed within 5 days. I don't even have the time to shop much less go thru the hassle of returning things that don't work, so my strategy is I just don't buy things anymore. Is this the end result sellers are looking for?
The toaster option on this particular pizza model failed after three months, and that's the job I need it to do 90% of the time. I live in an isolated area where returning anything is a major job in itself, and for anything under $100 I end up tossing in the garbage. I've tired of wasting my money and of being so disrespected and disregarded by manufacturers and sellers alike. Since this was near the top of the line in Black & Decker toaster ovens I thought it would be worth the risk. I was wrong.

No, it's not acceptable to expect the customer to schlep failed mercahndise back to the seller. We expect the things we spend our hard earned cash on to WORK. I have the ability to completely re-do my kitchen, but I'm so burnt out on appliances that don't work and workmen who do sloppy work [when they actually show up, that is], that it's easier just to make do with what I've got.

Customer Review: Junk

Bought mine at MENARDS April 2009 It quit working this month 10/2010 only has 1 year warranty.
Black & Decker has been going down hill with the quality of products for sometime.
It was made in China. I'm going to get a Hamilton Beach.

Customer Review: OK oven but design flaw causes early failure
Summary: 2 Stars

I like this toaster oven as a small counter-top oven, but it honestly doesn't toast very well. The size is nice - you can fit a nine inch pizza inside - and this one can cook a frozen pizza pretty well. I've even baked biscuits, cookies and bread in this toaster oven, although the heating elements can sometimes get too close to what you're cooking and burn it. Putting aluminum foil over whatever you don't want burnt works well enough to solve this.

The BIG problem I have with this toaster oven is that the dial that controls the bake temperature AND the bake/toast function is at the top of the controls and apparently gets too hot, then melts, causing the whole unit to stop working. (I purchased mine in 2007, so there may be newer models without this problem). This serious design flaw makes this toaster oven fail after just a couple years. Black and Decker should have either used a temperature dial that was more temperature resistant (like made of metal instead of plastic), or put better ventilation near the top of the controls.

I'm good with tools and fixing things, so I opened mine up when it first failed and was able to jury-rig it to work OK again, but the same control dial has failed a second time, and I think it's dead permanently.

Because the TRO651 is just about guaranteed to fail after a year or two of use, I have to give it a low rating and recommend that anyone looking at it buy a different model. Maybe they fixed this melting temperature dial problem in newer revisions to this model, but I can't be sure.

Customer Review: Poor Construction
Summary: 1 Stars

I had numerous problems with this Toast-R-Oven. I've only had it slightly over a year and I am now junking it and looking for a new one by a new brand.
Within about one month, the oven temp dials popped off, and continued to do so each time I used the toaster. The handle to the glass door came loose next and must be reattached each time or I will burn my fingers. The coils are placed in such a way that it overcooks near the front of the oven, but not enough in the middle. Toast is ALWAYS inconsistent, sometimes burnt on the ends but not toasted in the middle. It Never toasted evenly on both sides. Any attempts at baking result in the same problems.

On the plus side, I did not have some of the other problems often seen with toaster ovens. The timer turns off automatically when I open the door. It was a simple chirp that could be heard but not too loud. I liked having the crumb tray pull out from the front. And the coil protetion was helpful for dripping pizza and such.

Considering the price of this toaster oven and the problems I have had, there are others that are much cheaper which I am sure would do a much better job.

Customer Review: Poor Support - unreasonable Warranty - Not happy
Summary: 2 Stars

Our defective and discontinued TRO3200 toaster, under warranty, was replace with this Unit TRO651.

On the phone, getting the RMA#, they told us to choose another like it. We did and said to make sure it was white (TRO651W). They said they could do that. Later we called them about a BLACK unit they shipped to us INSTEAD, they said that they DO NOT guarantee you will receive the SAME COLOR under warranty. So beware.

Here is the Warranty out of the TRO651 manual:
...
"What will we do to help you?
* Provide you with a reasonably similar replacement product that is either new or factory refurbished "

Pretty vague and open to their interpretation. I originally bought a WHITE toaster to match my kitchen, they tell us we can have a matching color unit, but replace it with a black large bulky unit and call it "reasonably similar".

Yes, they did give us a replacment, but NO, they don't seem to care if you like the replacement or not.

Their final answer was very systematic and cold. So that's the way it is.

Bye bye Black and Decker
