Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black and Decker CHV9600 9.6-Volt Cyclonic DustBuster

Customer Review: Battery Died, Very Short Life
Summary: 5 Stars

UPDATE: Would change from 5 star(rating after having unit only several mos) to 1 star if I could. After following detailed directions from customer rep on how to incr battery life (which are diff from that in instruc manual), it still died in less than 2yrs of infrequent use. Only authorized dealer has replacemt battery and it costs as much as buying new unit ($31. with ship). Would NEVER buy again or recommnend.

Customer Review: Battery life is 4 months tops
Summary: 1 Stars

My spouse operates this vacuum daily until the rechargeable nickel-cadium battery is dead to avoid any memory issues. Like the Black & Decker 15.6V CHV1560 cordless hand vacuum, the battery life is 4 months tops.

Perhaps Black & Decker should replace the nickel-cadium battery with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery on all of their cordless hand vacuums.

Customer Review: Battery life to about 2 min after a year of use
Summary: 1 Stars

When we initially got this product - it was great. The suction was strong and the battery life was long. Over the course of a year, the battery life has dramatically deteriorated. After a year, it only lasts about 2 minutes. The positive reviews are all from people who have had this only a short time. This is a disposable product - seeing that the battery isn't designed to be replaced.

Customer Review: Battery pack replacement - perfectly doable.
Summary: 5 Stars

This Dust Buster is one of my all time favorite appliances! It worked for years and finally the battery started dying.

I purchased the replacement battery online from [] for $20.93.

One detail regarding changing the battery:

There are pretty good instructions on eHow, but I have a few things to add:

The battery was a bit hard to get out. I had to slightly chip the rear brackets because they completely encased the back latches and it was not possible to slide out the battery, it was blocked. I chipped little pieces off the latches with the screwdriver and pulled the battery out. It takes a bit of strength to pull it, so I would not define it as sliding.

When putting in the new battery you really need to push it in very strongly in order for the circuit panel to click into place. Again, be patient, it is not without a bit of an effort.

In summary I have to say that once I figured it out, it was straight forward. The total battery change took 15 minutes (with figuring out why parts do not move), so totally worth it.

Customer Review: Battery replacement
Summary: 4 Stars

After five years, having treated the NiCad batteries with respect and regular full discharges, the battery pack faded after about 30 seconds, so I went a-Googling for "black and decker dustbuster parts" and lo and behold, there was a site that not only had it, there was a description of how to take the old pack out and put the new one in. My CHV 9600 Dustbuster is working well again.
