Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4 HP Variable-Speed RouterCustomer Review: A good router but... Summary: 4 Stars
Everyone raves about the Bosch 1617EVS router, primarily
because it has a good depth adjustment mechanism. However, as a
previous reviewer pointed out, the On/Off switch is flakey.
Mine died for the first time very quickly after I started using
the router. I had to bring it to a repair place and let it sit
for a month while the switch was on order. It just died again.
I suppose it is best to get two routers, so you have one to use
while the other is in the shop.
Customer Review: A little top heavy 5 Stars
I use this router mostly in my router table and I love the height adjustment on this router. Smooth running unit that has even enough power for my raised panel bits. The only thing i don't like about is it's awkwardness. It's a little too top heavy. But overall a great router.
Customer Review: All-Around Terrific Router Summary: 5 Stars
Like other Bosch tools I have used, this router is terrific. I use it in a router table, where it is delightful: it's light enough to handle when installing under the table, it's controls are easy to get to, and the height adjustment is fabulous. More on the height adjustment of this router -- I have used many other routers, but none adjust their height as precisey and smoothly as this Bosch. All you have to do it unlock the adjuster, then turn a turret, and the bit raises and lowers slowly for you. Then you lock the adjuster and you're set. The soft-start feature is also wonderful. The speed adjustment is very responsive and has many settings, which is good if you're doing raised-panel doors. As far as cutting goes, I am very pleased. The router keeps the speed constant through the wood, whether you're cutting a dado or routing a shape on the edge of a board. Once again, I have nothing but praise for another Bosch power tool.
Customer Review: Almost couldnt ask for better Summary: 4 Stars
I just recieved this router, and have been able to use it a few times on my router table (Bench Dog). I really like the soft start. The noise level is almost as quiet as my Makita cordless drill! I used it to cut some tongue and grooves in solid Mahogany and Mahogany ply. Not once did I tax the unit. On a scrap piece I even forced it to see if I could get it to bog down, and it just kept chugging along. My only complaint with this router is the same for all routers. It seems to me that someone should be able to come up with a quick change system for the bits. But if that is all I can say bad about this tool, you can bet that it is well worth your money.
Customer Review: An excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this router with the intent of leaving it permanently in my new router table but it's to nice a tool to do that. The depth adjustment is the finest I've ever worked with, capable of very precise work. The handles are comfortable and, even though they are set low to the base, the balance is excellent. The soft start feature is a good side benefit that makes the machine easy to control on startup. To make it easier to shift in/out of my table, I also bought the Bosch undertable base. It's esentially the same as the stock base, less the nice wood handles. The bonus is that it has the same great depth adjustment plus and extention for the adjustment knob to make it easier to use. I'm very happy with both items and recommend them. Be careful if you order the undertable base, it only fits certain Bosch routers.
