Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4 HP Variable-Speed RouterCustomer Review: I am now the most amazing woodworker on earth!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My Bosch router is amazing!! Not only does it allow me to make outrageous amounts of sawdust on my garage floor and/or feet, it allows me to turn 1x12 boards into incredible toothpicks in a matter of seconds!! I have had my fantastic router for 1 week, and have built..well, nothing yet - but I've done a fabulous job annoying my wife with the racket. In all honesty (if anyone has made it this far on my review) it is a great router. It's my second, and if I had gotten it the first time, I would only have and need one router.

Customer Review: I love this router! Summary: 5 Stars
2HP is tons of power for a router, but this one still starts up smooth with the electronic "soft start" circuitry. The variable speed control is a great feature too. Amazingly accurate depth adjustment. The wooden handles are a touch of class. Oh yeah, it's also lightweight and very quiet. I suggest buying the combination set that comes with both the fixed base (like this one) and the plunge base. That deal is too good to pass up.
Customer Review: It has its problems Summary: 3 Stars
I hate to be a party pooper to all the folks who love their 1617EVS router, but I've owned this machine for three years, and it has its problems. When using this under a table, the height adjustment mechanism becomes clogged with dust and makes it difficult to adjust the height. When using this freehand, the on/off switch is a little awkward to use, and the smooth wooden handles can get a little slippery when working in the summer months with sweaty hands. For free hand operation, I like my lowley Craftsman better. The handles are better suited for getting a firm grip, and the switch is built into the handle. For doing freehand work, I would recommend getting a D-handle router such as the Bosch 1618. I've made a number of raised panel doors with the 1617. The bit I use is 2.5 inches in diameter. This router will work, but you will have to take 3 or 4 passes to get the profile to 3/8 deep. In the three years I've had this, I had to replace the on/off switch twice. Probably working the router too hard with the panel raising bit. For using the router under the table, I would definately recommend the Bosch 1619EVS (see my review).
Customer Review: It's just great Summary: 5 Stars
My neighbor had the 1617 without the soft start. You had to hold the router with one hand while you flipped the switch with the other hand. It has a lot of torque and intially jerks hard in your hand. A sweaty or tired hand and you could have a problem. The recent review in Fine Woodworking loved this router, but also praised the D-handle. It cost ... more, but is worth every penny as it gives you complete control upon start-up. The soft start feature is great, the variable speed is good for large bits, but what sets this router apart from the others is the fine calibration on the depth gauge that allows you to make precision cuts. There is no better router for ....
