Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch ROS20VSK 120-Volt Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander KitCustomer Review: Very comfortable sander Summary: 5 Stars
This is the fourth random orbital sander I have had, and it is by far the easiest to hold. I have only used it on metal lawn furniture in preparation for painting, but it performed very well.
Customer Review: Works for me Summary: 4 Stars
This is the first orbit sander I've owned so I don't have much to compare but I'm pleased with the performance. I recently upgraded a 1966 condo and even though this unit was probably not designed with all my applications in mind it was almost always up to the task. I used it to smooth out some drywall patches, sand cabinet doors, prepare surfaces for paint, remove rough edges and even fine tune some things when they just wouldn't quite fit together. The only place this thing failed was sanding between coats of polyeurathane. When refinishing hardwood floors you're supposed to lightly sand between finishing coats and instead of renting another machine I tried using this unit. It worked well for about 450 sq feet but then clogged and basically stopped working. I had to hook up the vacuum attachment and my shop vac to clean it out and keep it running while working with the really fine dust the poly was generating. And this lead to my discovery of the worst feature...the vacuum attachment is terrible. It isn't snug on the machine and even less snug on the vacuum. You'd need some tape or something to hold it in place if you intended to use it for any length of time. That's really my only complaint and to be fair I was probably abusing the machine by using it in that manner. Overall it's a nice piece of equipment and has a ton of uses.
Customer Review: Worth every penny already, still, and again. Summary: 5 Stars
I was trying to strip old wallpaper glue that had been applied - many years ago - to bare plaster, some bare drywall, and some primed drywall. Stripping with 80 grit worked better than expected. There was a fiber tape sealing the plaster at the corners that was frayed, so that was spackled over pretty heavily; 220 grit and the sander on it's lowest setting let me work that down to a respectable finish.
The sander has several hours of continuous use, which isn't nearly enough to judge it's reliability. That said, after hours of sanding with this, my hands don't feel numb from the vibration, and my hands are about as unused to this type of labor as you're going to get.
This gadget saved me days of labor. Worth my money. Hopefully in the long run it lives up to the rest of the glowing reviews.
Edit:
Probably a dozen more hours sanding the glue off the walls of the adjoining room. Previously, we figured the only option was to re-drywall this room, as no amount of scraping or scrubbing or chemicals were making any difference to whatever glue they had used.
So I moved to 60 grit paper.
The dust filter is worth it's weight in gold; it catches the majority of whatever I was sanding off the walls. My hands are large (3XL?), so my pinky fingers got a little heat from the exhaust vent on the side of the tool, but no amount of leaning on this thing - for hours - caused it to have the least bit of problems.
Heavy grit sanding discs - like the 60 grit - seem to give up on the velcro side long, long, long before the abrasive side is done. I'm guessing that's the paper I went with, as a new disc sticks to the tool like glue.
Again, having a decent sander has saved me a lot more than it cost, and I don't have any complaints about this one. A+++
Edit, again:
Oak bookcases, pine workbench, countertops, end tables, desk hutch, and several other home/furniture projects are now a lot smoother. Winner. For anything that doesn't require a belt sander, this is the go-to.
Edit, again:
I started on end-grain cutting boards, and so far, have cranked out almost a half dozen of them. This thing is a plastic tank.
Customer Review: Wow Summary: 5 Stars
For me, this sander is certainly a much-needed step-up in quality, and I expected it to sand well. But I was so surprised at how well it sucks up the dust--it's like there is a mini-shopvac in there. I admit that I had to work with it for a few minutes on some scrap to get my balance and pressure straight (I just needed to develop a little technique). It worked unequivocally strong at 80 and 120 grit. But, at 220 grit, I think it worked better when I slowed it down (from 6 to 3). I haven't tried it with 150 or 180 grit yet, and I'm not sure that I will. I think it works well to go 80, 120, 220, and then go back over the workpiece with my Makita pad sander at 220 (or 180) to be sure there are no swirls.
Customer Review: best sander, easy to use. Summary: 5 Stars
When it come to furniture, I'm not a woodworker and I tried to sand my dining table by hand first, it took too long so did some research and found this one, it works like magic, no dust and with 6 speed, even my daughter and wife jump in and helped me because it's easy and quiet.
