Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch TS1003 Table Saw Left Side Support ExtensionCustomer Review: Red handle interference? Bosch will send parts. Summary: 4 StarsI had the same previously mentioned issue with one of the support rods interfering with the red handle. Called Bosch and they sent a new rod and bracket to fix this. An added bonus is that the new bracket has a locking knob to hold the extension in the closed position during transport.
Customer Review: Sure Beats a saw horse Summary: 4 StarsI bought the Bosch TS1003 Table Saw Left Side Support Extension (for the Bosch 4000 table saw) along with the rear extension and the dust collection bag. I am pleased with all three but will review this item first.
All parts were sent intact and all are metal. Assembly instructions were fine. The Support extends out to the left 12", so the full width of the table with the right and left extensions all the way out is about 50". The unit is primarily aluminum and therefore light, but strong enough to hold a wide, heavy piece. Bosch warns that your saw should be anchored for such pieces, as it could tip over otherwise.
The design principle is similar to that of the right extension (which comes with the saw) as it too has a support arm for your workpiece which rides in or out on two bars. The left extension does not lock into place like the right one, probably because it is not designed to accommodate the fence, as is the right side extension.
Installing the four washer-like stops (which keep the extension from going in or out too far,) is the most difficult part of the assembly. You can take a small hammer and knock the stops into their grooves with a few raps, or take a wood block and use it to press them into place one at a time. Two washers and a screw are used to attach the support arm to the steel bars. I was tempted to replace two of the supplied washers with lock washers, but will let that go unless the unit starts to loosen from the bars.
As many have noticed, the left extension can hit against the right extension's lock (under the red handle). This is a design flaw which caused me to deduct a star, as it requires a work-around. Here is mine:
Before you adjust the right or left extensions, pull up the red handle (which locks the right extension.) Next, adjust either or both the right and left extensions in or out, and finally press down (lock) the red bar. It will not go down all the way, but it will lock nevertheless.
What almost made up for the above-mentioned design flaw, was that, with the left extension all the way in, it is now possible and, with relative ease, to clamp something (like a featherboard) in the middle 4-5 inches of the left side of the table. Without the left extension attached, this is quite difficult and precarious. While I consider this a nice bonus, I did not add back a star, as this looks like an unintended consequence.
With both extensions all the way out, and the fence all the way to the right, the table can accommodate a piece 48" wide. I always have 4 x 8 plywood ripped or crosscut at the home center, because I work alone and am not a contractor who may not have the luxury or time for that so, for large/heavy pieces, you will have to remember the Bosch warning to anchor the table.
Also, since the left side support does not lock into place, a contractor will need to tape it against the table to hold it in while transporting it from site to site.
It sure beats a saw horse.
With special pricing of 20% off the normal price, the cost was $13.60, along with free shipping, this is a great value, in my view. The Left Extension, Rear Extension, and the Dust Collection bag total cost (all with free shipping) was $41.18.
Customer Review: Some modification needed Summary: 4 StarsLike the rear extention, the right extention is a very useful addition to the table saw. For ripping wide stock it is invaluable if you do not have a freestanding side support.
The rear extension was easy to install and needed a little adjustment (see my other reviews). The side extension is a little more complicated. As others have noted, the side extension does not go all the way in as it hits the "red handle" used to unlock the right extension. To fix this problem, I reversed the installation of the front bracket. Then on the support, I measured 1 and 1/2 inches toward the front, drilled two 3/8" holes to approximate the original elongated hole and used a file to match the original. The extention now slides all the way in. Of course, you will have to pull the left extention out a bit before lifting the "red handle" to extend the right extention.
I am somewhat disappointed in Bosch. They seem to have good ideas but little common sense (like the spacing of the brackets for the side extention).
Customer Review: no rating Summary: 4 Stars Again, I have'nt even used the tool yet
Customer Review: Not as good as the Rear Extension Summary: 4 StarsWorks well. though the extension will not slide all the way in because it hits the table locking mechanism "red handle". This means that the extension always sticks out 4"-5". Bosch products are normally very well designed so I don't know how this passed the engineers ??????
The rear outfeed is perfect and the left works OK
