Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bostitch HP118K 23-Gauge 1/2-Inch to 1-3/16-Inch Pin NailerCustomer Review: buy extra nails.....but not from Amazon! Summary: 4 Stars
I love this nailer, now that I got one that works, the first one sent by Amazon whould not even drive the one inch nails flush no less countersink them. I think Bostitch must be getting a lot of complaints on this issue. I sent it back and received a second one and it works perfect, the only problem was the shippment of nails... the box came loose durning shipping and I was playing 1,000 nail pick-up! These nails are tiny, thats why they are called "pins" but when the glue which holds these pins togeather come apart durning shipping they are usless, they cannot be used in the gun. I went to my local Woodcraft and purchased a selection of Porter-Cable 23 gauge pin nails at a very reasonable price. The Porter cable pin work great in the gun.
Customer Review: good tool, but be careful of the trigger Summary: 4 Stars
leaves the tiniest hole imaginable. two things to get used to, if your used to using regular nailers, the safety is a double trigger, not a nozzle depression, so it's easy to fire off, very easy. also there's no rubber tip on the nozzle, so if you used to leaning into your nailer, you'll leave a dent.
once I got the hang of this pinner (and the shock of pinning my finger, just once), I really liked it. a great tool to have if you do any finish work.
Update: This nailer is good while it lasts. For the price I can't complain. But for long term use and if you can afford, maybe a step up would be a good idea. I can't comment on my more expensive nailer because I haven't used it enough. This nailer is excellent for occasional use and as a starter, and reasonably priced. It won't last forever and will start to need a fair amount of TLC after a year or two of moderate use. Good product, but not built to last, which may be a feature of the type of tool (pin nailers).
Still deserves a four star rating.
Customer Review: great tool Summary: 5 Stars
Used this to attach the trim and door stops when installing the interior doors of my house. It leaves a very small hole which is hard to detect without looking for it. Used it alot without any problems. Would highly recommend it.
Customer Review: just so so Summary: 3 Stars
I use this for two reasons.
1 so as not to split wood with a larger 18ga brad.
2 for a less noticable hole.
The short comings of this pinner is its lack of power in the depth drive.
It only barley sets the pin. which makes it tough to fill. I've often had to get out a nail set because its flush with the surface, which makes an even larger hole.
Customer Review: patience young impulse shopper Summary: 3 Stars
shot up many a clip of pins over the past week on a kitchen with cherry cabinets and trim. guns of this ilk are absolutely invaluable in delicate/intricate hardwood production work, from temporary jigging to glue up clamping to achieving the perfect miter. but this gun drove me up the wall and forced the guy coming behind me with the markers and putty to take his artistry to a new level. almost every pin stood proud, long grain shots and end grain. if it wasn't proud there was the slightest dent from the gun nose and the pin was still didn't countersink. when trimming in standard fjp this gun is a godsend, but for hardwood work you had better invest in a microscopic nailset(alien technology, coming soon) if bostitch hasn't decided to include one in the case already
...to follow up, this pinner is but a continuing let down. production installation of hardwood is the name, having the pin hold the pieces is but half the game. the many, the proud. i have a quick learning curve, now i've got a grex.
