These filters really dramatically improve the taste of tap water. After we started using these, my aunt and uncle converted over too. As the reviews previously mentioned, when putting in water for the first time, little activated carbon granules spill out, so be careful not to drink them. In reality, the carbon particles are probably not harmful if you drink them accidentally; doctors often feed it to patients for accidental ingestions, but the silver particles are probably not good for you. Some tips:
1) Keep the filter wet
2) Change it out after about 2 months; you can go a little bit longer if fewer people are using it; since only my roommate and I use it, we go about 2.5-3 months before swapping it out
3) Clean the pitcher out regularly too, since a lot of the minerals in the tap water tend to sediment out over time
...and you will be all set! I went for the 10 pack for the cheapest per-unit cost. Happy drinking!

Got the pitcher and a couple of filters from a friend who went back to bottled water (lunatic!). Tried it, liked it. The more I use this filter system, the more spoiled I get for good-tasting water. In my area, I can get probably three months out of a filter. To keep plenty on hand, I use two one-gallon jugs from my bottled water days, and keep filling them up from the filter pitcher. That way I've always got plenty on hand. When the filter's done, I saw it open at the bottom and spread the charcoal granules on a peanut butter sandwich. Makes for a tasty but crunchy snack. HAHAHA! Seriously, I haven't found anywhere in my area to recycle the filters. I've ended up tossing them. But the water tastes so GOOD! If you like water more than beer (the solution to thirst in Mexico) then get a pitcher and a box of these filters. You won't regret it.
