Tools and Hardware Reviews of CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud FinderCustomer Review: Awesome tool - exceeded expectations Summary: 5 Stars
Great "old school" tool/gadget (no batteries required). Works exceptionally well! Impressed with it's ability to hold onto even the head of a small finish nail! No more false signals; if it sticks to the wall you're on the stud (actually grabs the screw or nail head, typically located in the center of the stud). For $10, a "must have" in your tool box. Actually I'm placing an order to snag a few as gifts/backup.
Customer Review: Best 10 bucks you'll ever spend Summary: 5 Stars
I've never had a reliable stud finder. I'm a handyman and use stud finders a lot, many times with great frustration. Recently I was looking for a better stud finder on amazon, thinking that if I paid more I might get a more accurate one. But even on the pricey ones the reviews fortold more of the same. Then I came across this little gem at a price that made it a shoe in for buying. If it didn't work I could use it to pick up screws or something.
Well after a few weeks I'm totally impressed with how this lo-tech gadget stacks up to other stud detectors. It more than stacks up. It beats them hands down. I had been putting up stair rails in multiple apartments. The walls these stair rails were to be on would give me no reliable reads with a standard stud finder. Even finger thumping didn't work. I believe they are double sheetrocked because they devide apartments. Anyway the ch hansen found the studs immediately. In fact many of the old stair rails had been installed with supports that were not on studs. I guess the installers just gave up and decided that multiple supports would hold anyway.
I now reach for this stud finder and don't think I'll be using the standard finders much anymore, except maybe when I feel there is an un-nailed stud in the wall...like maybe a firestop for instance.
I also love the way it sticks on the wall so you can release it and make measurements etc. Now if they would integrate this device with a laser line drawer they would have a phenomenal product. You could locate a stud and then it would shoot a laser line up and down. If you had another one of these to find another nail below or above then you could adjust the laser unit to point right up and down the stud with a good deal of accuracy. This would not be hard to do. I have a B&D stud finder for about $40 which does just that. only problem is that it's like other stud finders..undependable.
Finally, for those who are giving this low ratings because they bought it for plaster lath walls....There are limitations to every tool. In most uses this will outperform a standsrd stud finder. This stud finder may flop for use on old plaster walls, , but try a standard finder. Most likely it will also be useless. Sometimes there are no miracles.
Customer Review: Best Product I've ever used!!! Summary: 5 Stars
No more filling holes due to improper reads from battery powered stud finders. There are no words to describe how impressed I am with this product!!!
Customer Review: Best Stud Finder Out There Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little skeptical about this plastic box with magnets in it, but it has surpassed all expectations. It locates studs with great accuracy. Battery free operation is awesome. This is better than the more expensive electronic devices and a fractions of the price. Highly recommended. Tip: If you want a visual of where the stud lies behind the drywall, you can fasten weight to a string and tie it to the loop on the finder while the finder is high up on the wall. The string will hang plum revealing where the stud is.
Customer Review: Best Studfinder EVER Summary: 5 Stars
If I could give this six stars, I would. This little tool is very cheap but does the job better than very expensive electronic stud finders - it works a different way!
This stud finder has magnets on it, really powerful little ones. It finds the nails that were driven into your studs when the house was built, with perfect ease.
The first time I used it, I took it out of the packaging, ran it over my wall where i needed to drill, and found the stud in about 12 seconds. Best part about it - it sticks to the wall where the stud is so you can mark it without holding the stud finder!
Don't bother with a Zircon. At all. Just buy this, you can't go wrong.
