I have two or three other stud finders that are supposed to electronically find the studs. I have continual problems with erroneous readings and they are often flat out wrong. They are also bulky and unwieldy. The Hanson stud finder is absolutely awesome - it is compact and sticks to the wall with a powerful magnet that centers precisely over the screws used to install the wallboard. No more false readings! I finally put up 5 shelves and a wall mounted jewelry cabinet with 100% accuracy with this little baby. If you need to find the stud this is the product you need! This stud finder was marked down to $5 the other day in a local big box store but no one was buying it. I'm such sucker for tools, and for $5, I gave it a try. Wow this is really nice! The magnets are super strong and had no problem finding nail heads right away. I have another type of magnetic detector, two other electronic stud finders and a metal detector wand for extracting nails in recycle wood but this one is my favorite for now.
To find a stud sometimes you need to use every trick in the book - magnetic, electronic, old school tapping for sound, drilling small holes and/or sticking in an inspection camera.
Both electronic stud finders, even setting for deep penetration, were useless in old buildings with lath and plaster but this Hanson 03040 did not have any problems finding iron nails attached to the studs.
Its just couple of small strong magnets in a plastic housing but it works! For $5 each, I'm going back to get a few more to leave at various job sites.

Item is very good. It's often to sometimes keep things simple. In this case, an electronic stud finder may not always be dependable and durable. The CH Hanson does it's job with a simple magnet. No electronics, no batteries, no failures. Must I say more. It would be nice if the magnet is a bit stronger, but this is just preference.
