I bought this for my husband because he measures floors for his job. Before this, he used the regular tape measures and it would break in 6 months or less so we decided to invest in this laser tape measure. He said that it's very accurate, quick and easy to use. This gadget works.
Once you get used to it, you'll feel deprived if you have to drag out an old fashioned tape measure.
But don't throw away your steel tapes yet. You can't measure anything with a laser unless you have a light-reflecting target.
Be prepared to fabricate targets when necessary. I use some scrap shelving. It is accurately milled with white plastic coating. Perfect.
Distances up to 50 feet are not too hard, but beyond that, it gets tricky. If you have a dark night, a tripod, and a good target, 75 feet is feasible. For 100 feet, I would use a steel tape.
To measure from foot-level to something overhead, don't put the laser on the ground and shine it into your face. Make a mono-pod from an old broom handle or something, and work from a comfortable height.
You'll be measuring things you never measured before!

This device beats the sonic type measurers hands-down in terms of accuracy, max distance, resolution, and reliable results. It's easy to use, the LCD display is easy to read, and it feels good in the hand. I like being able to switch back and forth between inches for small measurements and feet/inches for large measurements. I also like the ability to add (or subtract) consecutive measurements, as well as the automatic square footage calculations. It comes with a nice nylon belt case and a 9V battery. Instructions are brief and easy to understand.
I haven't tried it outdoors in bright sunlight yet, so I can't report how will it works in that environment. Indoors, works great. If you can put the laser spot on it, you can measure it.
