Tools and Hardware Reviews of CST/Berger TLM100 Laser Distance MeasurerCustomer Review: Nice but consider the accuracy Summary: 4 Stars
Works great, as advertised, easy to use.
The only thing is, when they say there is up to 1/4 inch inaccuracy at 100 feet distance, you have to realize there is also 1/4 inch inaccuracy at 20 feet, or 10 feet, or even 1 foot (it's due to the clock speed of the microprocessor).
For me this is just not accurate enough. Like if you're doing molding - - forget it.
If the quarter inch is not a problem for your work, this one is a fine deal.
The same manufacturer makes model LT-160 accurate to 1/16 inch (slightly higher price).
Customer Review: Not good for outdoor applications Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this device, making a site survey alone was a pain with a tape measure, but now it is much easier. Everything works exactly the way it is described.
I found it difficult to aim the laser to the target on very sunny days while working outside. To Stanley; only missing thing on this device is a backlight for the screen.
Customer Review: Not worth the money-Save up for a Disto instead Summary: 1 Stars
For years I had a different laser measuring device which finally gave out. I am an appraiser and I also perform insurance surveys and I don't like standing out in the cold with a tape measure or measuring wheel trying to get measurements. But I did not want to spend the couple of hundred dollars for a Disto, which I really wanted. I went ahead and purchased the FatMax Tru-Laser not long after it originally became available for sale. From the very beginning I had great difficulty getting reliable measurements. As the weather got colder it became worse and the rear battery cover kept wanting to come off and did not want to stay on. I ended up sticking it with my other tools and purchasing the Disto. I attempted to give it another go in the summer but continued to have inaccurate and inconsistant measurements. I felt I had paid too much for it and that for what I do and my need to be accurate, consistant, and quick and it just did not meet my needs. My old first generation laser measurer had cost less and was reliable and this cannot take the simplest of measurements. I just recently sold mine on ebay. It is really worth it to save up the money for a Disto and to be able to perform the measurements it does. I assume that anyone who would be purchasing a laser measuring device of this price is employed professionally in a job which they need to decrease their measuring time and continue to be consistantly accurate, but not exact.
Customer Review: Outstanding product! Summary: 5 Stars
One of my all-time favorite tools I've ever bought! This is a very well designed tool. When I do trim work etc. like crown molding etc., I'm able to take all of my measurements without the need for someone to hold the other end of a tape. Tape is nothing but awkward compared to this laser measuring tool. I can measure a 2000 sq ft home for trim work in just a couple of minutes. The sum and volume functions are also a great feature for doing things like the above. You can easily switch the units as well and best of all, it has metric to thousands of a meter (mm) which is better for accuracy and much easier to use. The device comes calibrated to compensate for its own length in the measurement so you simply place the back end of it against a wall or in line with the end of the wall. You then hit the button once to target your length then again to get the measurement.
Customer Review: Professional Grade Device Summary: 5 Stars
Found unit highly accurate in measuring building interiors and exteriors. Measured up to 80 feet so far outside and when I checked accuracy with a tape measure, the device was right on. Rooms are sometimes not framed uniformly or walls have waves in them. This device makes taking more than one measurement between walls in a room a snap to check for rooms that aren't square. In rooms that are cluttered it's easy to measure. Just point make sure the laser is on the area you want to measure and its done; with the laser you'll never need anyone to hold a tape for you again!
Measuring gable heights on the exterior of a two or three story building to determine roof slopes is easy. On the interiors, vaulted ceilings are no longer a problem with the laser. Haven't had unit long enough to know about battery life. This is the only question I have at this point.
The Device will give areas and volumes and has several options for inch fractions or decimal point displays.(Personally I found 1/8 inch increments the best choice here, but fraction display is tiny, if you need reading glasses you may need them to read these fractions) Display is not lighted. When I'm scoping fire damaged buildings with no light inside I am able to read display with lamp or flashlight just as I would have to with a tape measure. (Stanley Corp., a lighted display option would be a plus for restoration contractors and insurance adjusters. I'm an insurance adjuster with a Major Insurance Carrier.)
