Chamberlain Whisper Drive 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener #WD822KD

We purchased this product to replace our ancient Genie opener and couldn't be more pleased with the operation and sound. After the inital, cumbersome, installation (we possibly should have decided to have it professionally installed to save some grief), we have found it to be very quiet.

Customer Review: Current Review and information
Summary: 5 Stars

As with the man who said this isn't an easy install he's right! Of course with a little mechanical skill you can do this but even with a currently installed opener which mine was a Genie it still took 3 hours! The pieces do go together quickly however I'm careful and double check and re-read the directions which prevents problems later. Be sure you have enough of the metal bar (the stuff with the holes drilled in it) to hang the unit properly and be sure you double check the track heighth over the garage door when it's open, mess up and you have to reposition all of rig. There isn't any extra parts needed to put this opener in except if you need a couple of bolts to help hang the opener so double check how you set up this part in the instructions to see if you need a couple of bolts.
Once again with a little caution and following directions this is one nice unit!! Once installed it is nice and quiet and did I mention no lubing a thing which unlike screw drive and chain drive openers which I've had some drip on my car and truck over the years as you lube them up per maintenance instructions. So no mess and the quietest unit I've ever owned. I can't hear my wife coming home, maybe that's bad...I don't know...
Can't say enough positive about this unit, it works extremely well and may cost a few more bucks than screw drive or chain but well worth it. And I quote from an article I've read, "if you own a Cadillac get the Cadillac opener, a belt drive," they aren't kidding!

Customer Review: Decent product but frustrating "for your own good" mandates
Summary: 4 Stars

I won't say it's easy to install, but it's not overly hard. The instructions are not very clear about how certain steps - I had to make up a decent amount as I went along. But it's not too much trouble to figure out.

But it's quiet, powerful, and seems to be good quality. I am a bit concerned about the long-term strength of the belt-bar - it comes in several small sections, jammed together.

It loses a full star, however, for the proprietary MANDATORY protection system of a light-beam and trip sensor, without which the unity will NOT function and surprisingly CANNOT be bypassed. I don't have any kids or outside pets. The unit already auto-reverses if it senses blockage; I don't need or want this "protect you from yourself" junk. By the way, the instructions say the mounting units for those sensors fit almost any garage door railing. They came nowhere close to being able to fit mine. The instructions recommend custom building wooden supports out of your garage to place them properly.

Customer Review: Definitely not what I expected
Summary: 2 Stars

The opener installed reasonably well. The price is reasonable, if I had not had problems (excessive noise and failure). I had the opener for just over 6 months when it failed. I used the owner's manual to isolate the failure to two possible options. I checked the warranty and it was only validate if you shipped the opener to the company without opening the cover. Not knowing how long this would take, I opened the cover and inspected the parts. I purchased ($30) and installed the first possible repair option from the owner's manual; it did not repair the problem. The second option was going to be ½ of a new opener, so I went and purchased another opener. Disappointed in it only lasting just over 6 months, and the noise is/was more than the new screw-drive opener that I purchased as a replacement.

Customer Review: Difficult customer support
Summary: 1 Stars

Update to paragraphs below: I DID get an excellent response to my email, and they gave me an 800 number for future use. Their number should be more available, but because their email support was excellent, I'd now rate the product a 4.
(Their 800 number: Technical Support Hotline at (800) 528-5880, M-F, 5:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. and Saturday, 7:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Mountain Time.)

After reading all the positive reviews I bought and installed one of these. The manual is good, installation was easy, and operation is quiet.

But I was unable to reprogram a supposedly compatible remote control and I tried to contact customer support. There is no way to reach a human being - so if the on-line hints and the manual don't help, you are out of luck. (There is an email support option which I didn't try; but has anybody EVER seen email support work?)

I'm not sorry I bought the product; but when it fails, I'm going to be really angry since there won't be any way to get support.
