I've been using Taylor's rain gauges for over a decade. Get a new one every few years as the plastic discolors or freezes and breaks. After a rain, my neighbors usually ask me "How much did we get?" the next time they see me walking the spaniels.
In my application, my rain gauge is located in the open attached to a fence post twenty-five yards from the back door. This rain gauges yellow backing makes it easy to see the water line and the big contrasting digits show up well with my binoculars without going outside. Big improvements in all ways.
