Tools and Hardware Reviews of Conair GS4R Compact Fabric SteamerCustomer Review: Decent Steamer, Decent Price Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this a week ago, It works well with most materials (collars still need to be ironed for the most part... but expect that with any steamer). It is 1200 watts, 300 less than the top of the line Jiffy and Rowenta models but in my eyes works just as well from reading reviews. You may have to make one extra pass, but to say 70-150 bucks...its worth it. It also comes with a door hook as opposed to those gangly pole models which I hear break easily. The only drawback I see is the hose length, there is a reason they call it a table top steamer... it will reach hanger to floor when set down by a door, but dont expect slack. All in all a fairly decent model.
Customer Review: Decent but Problematic Steamer (Also, Mold!) Summary: 2 Stars
For the price, this is a good little steamer. It gets wrinkles out as you would expect... wool is magic, cotton t-shirts are good, button-up cotton shirts retain traces of wrinkles but major wrinkles dissapear. The steamer is easy to fill, though sometimes getting the hose off of the unit is difficult. One problem with the steamer is where to put the paddle when you turn the unit on. Unlike a larger unit, it doesn't mount above the reservoir. You either leave it attached to the unit (not ideal) leave it on the floor, or rig it so it hangs somewhere until the steam starts.
Like many here, I had the gurgling problem. Seems that water collects in the paddle. Before using, I find it useful to shake the paddle so that the excess water falls out, towel off the paddle, then apply to clothing. Also, it is important to make sure that the hose is not kinked, as this also adds to the problem. Occasionally you'll find that the steam is leaking out at the base of the hose, either due to a kinked hose blockage, or the base turning as you use the hose. This creates less steam out of the paddle, and thus more work to get out wrinkles. BTW, the hose is some sort of weak plastic and it will kink at some point despite best efforts to keep smooth.
I can't blame this last bit on the steamer, though it seems quite odd. I went to use the steamer today (I've been using it 5 days a week for the last month or two) and needed to fill it with water. I happened to look inside of the reservoir and noticed that the bit of water that was left in there was cloudy. After pouring it out, I realized that there was a fair amount of mold growing on the bottom of the reservoir. I believe it is growing on the plate that heats the water. So, wow, some extremophile mold. But also, that's it for me and this steamer. Gross!
Customer Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
didnt work well. took too long to get hot and because the coil is so long it took forever for the steam to start
Customer Review: Do not waste your money on this Summary: 1 Stars
it's essentially a boiling pot of water that has a hose connected to it. It took me double the time to try and steam my clothes, and I ended up burning myself multiple times and having large blotches of water on my clothes. Purchase the Steamfast model. It's works great.
Customer Review: Does not remove wrinkles well and is dangerous Summary: 1 Stars
After you have the steamer running for a while, it starts to "spit" hot water onto the fabric you are steaming and subsequently on to the floor and anything else below. Not only does it get the fabric wet, its very, very hot water.
There is also no where to rest the handle in between garments. If you set it on the base it turns the unit off.
I would not recommend this product. Takes just as long as ironing. Go for a higher quality.
