Tools and Hardware Reviews of Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet FilterCustomer Review: Better than the pervious model Summary: 4 Stars
I got this to replace a model FM-15 that I had for may years but was becoming lose internally and leaking water when used. Since it leaked into the sink, it was just annoying and not a big problem. However, the 15-A is even better. It has an automatic shutoff that pops closed when you turn off the water and a better design where the older model had leaked. I look forward to many years of trouble free filtering at the exceptional levels that only an activated charcoal filter can provide.
Customer Review: Black water? Summary: 5 Stars
I installed this in about two minutes. Don't be shocked when black water comes out when you turn it on! After a few minutes, the water will clear. My water now tastes terrific and I'm no longer afraid to drink from the tap. I feel great knowing I won't be buying bottled water anymore and I'm saving about $18.00 per month! Delivery was actually faster than I was told. Buy it!
Customer Review: Blood, Sweat & Tears So Far! Now Let's See... Summary: 4 Stars
I have high hopes for this Culligan Faucet-Filter; it had BETTER deliver - it's taken lotsa sweat even to get it installed! [Okay, I exaggerated in my caption, talking of blood and tears. Sue me.]
I earlier bought a Pur Faucet-Filter, but returned it to the store unopened, scared off by the multiple reviews claiming that its plastic components cracked with little use. Passed on getting a Brita for the same reason. The glowing reviews of this Culligan model, many emphasizing its robust metal fittings, sold me on it. So, via Amazon, made the purchase.
The Filter arrived with Amazon's usual shipping speed; then trouble began. Turns out the faucet in my apartment is from an older era, with a smaller diameter than today's standard fittings. So its external threads couldn't begin to mate with the corresponding internal threads of the Culligan's built-in sleeve. The Culligan came with two different male/male couplers, but both of those were designed to allow its sleeve to mate with internally threaded faucets. I needed a true male/female adapter, externally threaded on one end to mate with the Culligan's sleeve and internally threaded on the other end to mate with my faucet. Trips to Lowe's and Home Depot were fruitless. One of them actually had the right type of adapter, but in much too large a size.
A desperate call to Culligan gave me the verdict from their technician that the two couplers as packaged with their Filter were all they could provide; I was on my own. Drats.
Cutting to the chase, salvation came with a trip to this local specialty plumbing supplier which everyone kept telling me about. After describing to them what I needed, we started exploring their bins where such adapters and couplers were stored; most of these bins were empty and it looked like a losing cause... until one bin had exactly two of the little baby I needed, at $2.40. Sold!
I've rated this Culligan Filter less than a full Five Stars because the aggravation and turmoil of seeking out that extra accessory to make it work has to detract from the product, even if it is not their fault that my faucet doesn't meet the latest standards. Several reviewers here have reported the identical problem, and most assigned this Filter One Star as a result.
So far, I've noticed that the water-flow through the filter is half of what the bare faucet allows, but this is to be expected and will be tolerable as long as it doesn't lessen significantly. As to the taste test, that is yet to come.
A follow-up review will appear from me in due course.
Customer Review: Brita or Culligan = form or function??? Summary: 5 Stars
I have use the Brita 42201 On Tap Filtration System for the past three years as it was the only option in my local big box retailer. The Brita filter stopped working and I still have a spare filter cartridge. I came to Amazon to find a better deal on a new Brita filter system and was surprised to see all the negative reviews. I checked other options and settled on the Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter. Here are the pros for each filter system:
Brita:
* Looks good
Culligan:
* Top rated at CR
* Faucet connection is made of steel
* Automatically shuts off the filter when you turn off the water
* Easy to clean
My only con for the Culligan is that the color is off-white with a slight pinkish hue. My faucet is white so it is noticeable.
The cons for the Brita are that it is expensive, difficult to use/clean and it is made of plastic so the durability is poor.
Overall the Culligan is definitely the better buy.
UPDATE: After a month of use I find that it doesn't always turn off after use. It is easy enough to turn off by pushing on the knob. Also it is defitiely pink in color. Still recommend this product.
Customer Review: C'mon, you can do it, too Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, I have to admit, that I have had this filter for a few months, never removed from the box. In the meantime, I've been environmentally unfriendly, by toting home bottled water. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I had an air of intimidation, that I would have difficulty installing this thing, or that it would not function as well as I had hoped. Yeah, I'm a bottled water snob and can probably identify my favorite brands blindfolded by the taste. So, I suspected my water would still taste hard, with its ghastly offensive, chlorine odor, and taste. To avoid disappointment in myself, or it, I denied I needed to tackle this job.
Well, I feel so foolish, now. It took me all of 10 minutes to install it today, without even reading the instructions, so ANYONE can do it---trust me. Then I gave it a taste test and was more than satisfied. I could no longer smell, or taste the chlorine. My water tasted almost as good as the spring water sitting on the counter. So, I have happy, dancing feet, today. I feel I have accomplished something that is worthwhile, not only for myself, but for the environment. I also think my lumbar spine will enjoy a break from toting water home.
I don't know how well the system will hold up in my very hard water environment. But it is quite inexpensive, so if I have to replace it due to hard water damage, it will not be that problematic.
