Customer Review: Decent system at a decent price

Shortly after moving to a small, rural town we received a mandatory notice from the water company stating that they were in violation of some EPA mandate. So, we began looking into water filters. We originally went with one of those faucet-mounted type filters. For whatever reason our water was really hard on those particular filters--after about a week the water flow became very weak and we had to replace the filter every 3 weeks or so (for 2 people that seemed like a lot). That got old quickly and after doing some research, we decided to replace our faucet-mounted filter with the Culligan Level 4 system. It's been a little over a year since we bought the system and overall I am pleased with it. It was fairly easy to install (and I'm no plumber) and we now replace filters every six months or so. The only drawback is the plastic faucet that comes with this kit. We were actually able to install the faucet without any problems, but it broke after 8-9 months. We replaced it with a model we found at our local hardware store and haven't had any problems since.Customer Review: Defective product floods kitchen

Filtered water very well from Nov 2008 - Aug 2009. Plastic nipple has broken from no apparent cause, sending a cascade of filtered water from my base cabinet down the basement stairs. The water was further filtered by my hardwood floors as it seeped into the basement where it is now raining from the ceiling. Thanks Culligan! 1. The filtered water produced by this unit still tastes noticeably like chlorinated tap water. Your results may vary, of course, but here in Los Angeles, my Brita filter does a much better job of improving the taste of our city water supply.
2. The Culligan tap is all plastic and feels cheap and delicate. The tap stem wobbles when you touch it. The on/off mechanism is not intuitive, and visitors to our home frequently try to pull up on it rather than rotate it as they should.
3. Perhaps it was this periodic wrenching by confused newbies that caused the threaded nipple on the tap to spontaneously shear off one evening. Nobody was touching the unit at the time, but fortunately I was home and noticed the kitchen floor and undersink cabinet flooded with water. We used the filter for about eight months before it self-destructed. I haven't tried to get it replaced under warranty, and I'm not sure I will bother, as we had already decided to find another solution. This filter was a waste of money.

The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the mounting system used by all these filters requires screwing the unit into a wall rather than providing a secure upright stand - which I ended up making. I did not use their supplied faucet as I already had a high quality brass unit in place. The faucet supplied is plastic and metal -looks OK. Water filter installs easily, filter replacement will be a snap, and the water is tasteless - no chlorine or nasty flavors remain. Only a reverse osmosis unit provides greater level of water treatment and they require a more complex installation and greater space.
