Tools and Hardware Reviews of Culligan US-EZ-4 EZ-Change Level-4 Under-Sink Drinking Water SystemCustomer Review: Good Filter...The rest is junk. Summary: 3 Stars
Came missing one of the plastic connectors..No big deal as you would eventually regret installing this thing with the laughable parts sent with it..Went to the big box store and bought copper compression connectors and a decent metal water dispenser..Also bought an in line copper valve to regulate the water pressure to the filter head as I really don't trust the push in and hope it locks hose fittings to the head.
Water tastes fine and even better I can sleep without one ear open, waiting for that awful hissing sound of a broken water connection.
Customer Review: Good Unit with One Big Weakness Summary: 2 Stars
I agree with what others have said, it's very solid unit and my rating would be much higher if not for the ridiculous way this unit is plumbed. It's designed with "quick-connect" fittings at the inlet and outlet that accept 1/4" tubing. Sounds wonderful. The problem is the fittings are not 'quick' to use and they don't 'connect' - they leak. The instruction manual warns you to ensure the lines go in straight to avoid leaks, but even with a lot of exertion you wind up with a wimpy connection. The quick-connect fitting is really a small plastic nipple with metal barbs embedded in it - the theory is you shove the plastic tubing in hard and the nipples grab the tubing with the metal barbs, pressing the tubing against a rubber seal within the body of the housing. Great plan - doesn't work very well. After a lot of tweaking, I got one side to seal okay, the other side simply would not seal and kept dripping; but even the side that wasn't leaking didn't inspire confidence. This ruins what is otherwise a very good design. Why Culligan/Pentex chose this goofy solution I can't say, but it results in a system you can't be confident will be leakfree. It they would have simply put threaded fittings in the body of this unit it would be a wonderful product (other Culligan filters have threaded bodies), but the way it is now I would not recommend anyone buying it. Since I'm stuck with it, I'm going to remove the "quick-disconnect" fittings and epoxy my own fittings to the body.
Customer Review: Good alternative to bottled water Summary: 4 Stars
The installation: Just like everyone says on the reviews, the parts are cheap and are made of plastic. You have to be very careful not to overtighten and strip the threads. It's a simple set-up. Main water line patches through the to the filter, and another line goes out to the newly installed faucet. It did leak on me because I didn't screw everything tight enough because I was afraid of stripping it.
As with every kind of water installation, you have to keep a check on it for 24hrs to ensure no leaks. What I did was put a bucket to catch any water and a paper towel above the bucket to see where the water was leaking from. After I made the fixes, it has never leaked since. It's been over 8 months.
The water & taste: I can definitely tell a difference in the taste of the water. I live around farm area. Because it so easily available, I drink a lot more water too. The water flow is slow though. Filling a 32 oz bottle takes about a 50 seconds.
Warning: If you don't have a predrilled hole, you will need a diamond head drill bit (cost around $15 at Lowes) if you have a cast iron sink. It's a pain in the butt and takes a long time. It's worth it once it's done.
Overall, I recommend this filter especially if you have a predrilled hole.
Customer Review: Good filtration, I guess Summary: 3 Stars
Based on the testing standards this filter is very good and the water tastes fine and it works well. The only thing that we don't like about it is the cheap water spout. The thing is so cheap and worthless that Culligan would be better off if they just lowered the price and left the faucet out of the package.
Customer Review: Good water, flimsy faucet Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered the Culligan EZ4 because it looked like one of the more cost effective systems. Well, I found out why it is so inexpensive. I had the same experience as David Y "under water". The plastic faucet is very flimsy. I was not even close to tightening the nut by hand and the plastic stem broke off. I called Culligan and promptly received a replacement faucet, this one without the Electronic Cartridge Life Indicator. It is not a comforting thought to have such break-prone parts in your plumbing system. What if it comes apart when we are out of the house? Other than that, it seems to work well, the water tastes great and the price is very reasonable. It is easy to install.
