Tools and Hardware Reviews of DELTA 34-183 Tenoning Jig

Customer Review: For a Craftsman Table Saw
Summary: 4 Stars

My table saw is perfectly aligned using a quality Inclinometer. Aligning the Tenoning jig took some time, but well worth it. I used the same alignment tool and a good square to set up the jig. The miter guide is too big for the Craftsman table saw, as others said. My Craftsman table saw miter is .744 and Delta tenoning jig miter is .753. Disassembly and reassembly of the jig was a breeze and took about 10 minutes overall. Miter sizing was very simple to correct. I just gave the guide a few light swipes across my Delta disk sander with medium grit sanding disk and voila - a perfect fit. Just go slow. Even if you go too far, the miter has fine adjustment screws built in. Make sure these are well inside the miter before honing.

The Miter Jig makes tenons and splines a work of art. Again, just take the time to set it up right and make test cuts using scrap wood. I am a happy camper. Thanks Delta.

Customer Review: Glad I bought it
Summary: 5 Stars

I was going to buy a tenoning Jig when I was at the Grizzy Outlet in PA but I didn't. But when I saw this delta at the same price I jumped on it. The Jig is first class, had to addapt it to left tilt for my saw. That was a piece of cake the instructions were very clear. I was a machinest for a number of years and this product is machined well.

Customer Review: Good Value
Summary: 5 Stars

I've wanted one of these for some time, but didn't think the cost would justify abandoning the homemade tenoning jig I've used for years. Careful set up is required, but the instructions are good, and it isn't difficult. Once set up, it holds true for cut after cut. I'm running it on an ancient Grizzly table saw that just barely survived the floods two years back and getting great results. I especially like the weight and mass of the tool, and the ease of using the speed clamp for production runs of the same cut. Worth the cost - no doubt.

Customer Review: Good, Heavy Duty, but difficult to set up.
Summary: 4 Stars

I was impressed with the weight of this jig - I would guess over 15 lbs. The castings are good quality and thick. Don't drop this on your toes! The weight keeps it firmly planted in the slot during use. It has two handles that keep your hands well out of harms way as you push your work through.

Setting up and trueing the jig was a bit of a pain. Having a left tilt saw required me to move the cleat to an alternate set of mounting holes in the shoe. Not too difficult once you take the whole jig appart. I reassembled it to do the squaring proceedure which is difficlut with the supplied allen wrenches. You have to access two screws through holes in the sliding upper base. These can only be reached with the long side of an allen wrench. I ended up using a long socket wrench mounted one to get enough torque to loosen and tighten the screws adequately. The rear screw can only be accessed if you remove the micro adjusting mechanism AGAIN on left tilt saws.

The stop screws for the verticle alignments are difficult to fine tune. The push block has only a threaded rod with a jam nut on it. I had to back the screw off its final position to allow for slippage while tightening the jam nut. I will probably still check it for square each time I use it anyway.

It does have a stop screw to keep the jig off your blade which does adjust fairly easily. You can also mount a sacrificial wood block on the verticle face if you plan to cut with a dado set. You supply the screws to fit the predrilled holes.

The instructions are not very easy to follow and are illustrated with smudgy B&W photos. Delta should take a cue from Incra and hire someone to draw the illustrations and write clearly.

Overall, this is a good product, but it's kind of like a '71 Ford pickup - slow to start unless you know how to finess it.

Customer Review: Great jig
Summary: 4 Stars

This jig really makes cutting tenons easy and accurate. It is quite heavy and solid.

Switching it from right tilt (default) to left tilt was a bit of a pain. The manual could use some work.

After it was switched it was easy to true up square and adjusts for cuts very easily. First project had 18 tenons to cut and they went quickly and came out very accurate.

The mitre bar adjusts for mitre slot width, so it fits my table saw mitre slot perfectly.

The thickness cut indicator doesn't seem to do too well for left tilt saws, but that's not a problem because I use the mortise to set the tenon thickness.
