For a few holes in thin metal any bi-metal hole saw will work and they all use the same grade of high speed steel so there is no reason to spend any more than necessary. The lack of cutting depth is also not a problem with sheet metal or thin steel. At less than $10 the DeWalt hole saw is a bargain as bi-metal hole saws go. I would not use them on anything other than thin steel as they are terrible for wood, MDF, Hardie cement board, particle board, plywood, or any other building material I want to cut.

For wood, OSB, fiber cement board, plywood, sheetrock, plaster, fiberglass, MDF, and anything else the TCT hole cutters like the ones from Blue Boar are a better deal if you plan to cut more than one or two holes. With a brand new bi-metal it takes me about a minute to cut a hole in one inch plywood subflooring and another 2 minutes to pry out the wood plug. With a TCT hole cutter with the big teeth and the big side slots I can cut the same hole in 3-4 seconds and the cut plug falls out of the hole saw. In Hardie siding the tungsten carbide teeth will outlast the bi-metal hole saws 10 to 1 which save us a lot of money and time.

With the TCT hole cutters I can cut everything with an 18v cordless drill. Until you have used one of the modern hole cutters you cannot appreciate how much better they are and how much better your cordless drill works with the right hole cutter.
